Default Treats that might tempt Yoda to take the next step.

Hi
Yoda is responding really well to all the taming methods that you have given me on a previous thread. He now will come to my hand and take food's, he will even put his front paws on my hand. He has worked out that the front cage door opens and will walk out and let me stroke him which I am thrilled with. However I haven't found a treat that he must have that will tempt him that I can comfortably put towards the back of my hand in order for him having to put all four paws on my hand.
I don't want to rush this process as I know it takes time but I wonder if there is a treat that hammies just can't resist?

Things I have tried are pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, fresh carrot, fresh yellow pepper, cheerios and cornflakes ( the last two being just one of each). Any hints or tips will be gratefully re dived.

Try brocolli or mealworms and nuts. I usually use walnuts and hazelnuts, although Gaby is particularly fond of hazelnuts.

Glad to see taming going so well for you Jules. Store bought treats aren't usually the healthiest options for hams but they are something designed to be delicious for them. Yoghurt drops and other various store-bought treats work well for taming but not too often.

Both our Syrians went crazy for banana I have wasted so many bananas cutting a slice for a hamster and forgetting about the banana till it's then gone brown! I cut a thickish slice of banana and then cut the slice in half so it's not too big. Other strong smelling fresh food like cucumber or a very small bit of cheese goes down well too.

Dried Mealworms worked wonders for taming my Syrian Pumpkin - they can be a hit or miss with Syrian hamster but loved by dwarf hammies).
For my past hamster I used either walnuts or monkey nuts.

It does come with a bit of trialing different option of treats out to see which Yoda absolutely loves and goes crazy for. Then you will know of the treat which will work best for taming.

Fresh veg which has been loved my my girls have been cauliflower, broccoli, peas, green beans, carrots, sweetcorn, cabbage and Brussels sprouts.

I'm so happy to hear that Yoda's taming has gone so well. Great job to you both!!!

As SKB mentioned, every ham's treat preference may be different so it is trial and error. I personally have used dried mealworms, sunflower seeds, monkey nuts (peanuts), and broccoli with my past hams and Eros. My previous hams loved mealworms instantly. However, it took Eros a short time to acquire the taste for dried mealworms, but now she will do just about anything to get them. They are one of her absolute favorite treats ever.
