Unhappy New Syrian hamster had a little tumble, what should I look out for!

Hello

Had quite a panic this evening for my poor little new hammie! Feeling especially guilty as it certainly could have been avoided ;(

Had him for about 3 days now and he has been so inquisivte and friendly it seemed we decided to try and start the taming process. We took off the bar part of his cage as the bottom seemed quite deep. He was absolutely fine at first but then seemed to get very excited and just as we were about to put the bars back on he managed to ping out of the cage. We keep him on a little storage cube maybe about 3 feet high. He landed in the cube and we frantically tried to keep him from going off but he ended up slipping through as he’s still quite young and we did slow his fall a little bit but he was on the ground (wood).

We were panicking quite a bit and he was just trying to fine a place to hide, poor little buddy. He was probably loose for about 15 seconds with us trying to get him before we caught him with a box. When we returned him to his home he moved to one of his burrows and sat balled up teeth chattering. Looked this up and said this could be fear/pain. Left him along for a bit and he moved within a few mins. We kept an eye on him and his ligaments seemed normal he did some good running on his saucer and has been doing it non stop basically.

We don’t see any slowness or obvious limp so we are hoping he’s ok internally. Do know that stress is a big deal for these little guys and he did a go through a pretty traumatic expierence. I know “wet tail” is a big one so I’ll be on the lookout for that. Are there any other possible issues that could arise from this that I should look out for? Thank you so much.

I have defintley learned my lesson. Next time we will have his cage within our bigger empty cage so it’s no problem if we escaped. Just want our curious little boy to be ok xx!

Hi & welcome to HC.
Sorry to hear about your hams fall, it sounds as though you've done a pretty good check already, he may be stressed for a little while but should get over it fairly quickly, it might be a good idea to wait a day or too before having another taming session if he still seems stressed.
If he's behaving normally otherwise & able to run in his wheel & do other things without limping or showing other signs of injury over the next few days he should be fine.

You might find it easier to just take him out of the cage & use a safe play area for taming, that could be a secure playpen he can't climb out of, the bath with a towel in the bottom & the plug in, or a large plastic storage bin, you can give him some toys to explore there & begin to interact with him at the same time.
Some hams aren't so keen on interacting in the cage or having their cages messed with!
You can use a tube, box or anything he'll climb into but can't jump out of to transport him safely to the play area.
