Hello from London
Hi!
I am a beginner hamster owner. It’s great to see so many knowledgeable people in here! 4 days ago, I welcomed Kendrick, a 9 week old female syrian hamster as a new member of the family! She seems to be settling in well, but I have a few questions!
1) she seems to snore from time to time, it sounds like a low growl not a screeching wheezing sound. I’ve inspected her breathing when she’s awake and she doesn’t make any wierd sounds.
2) she seems to chew the bars, my cage size is decent and she’s got a fair few things to play with, including several wooden chew sticks, a bridge, large cardboard hard tube, a 28cm diameter wheel etc. I’ve tried the olive oil method today which seemed to work for a minute but now she’s back chewing again! She does have other chew toys, and I’m concerned for her health if she continues to chew the metal bars. Am I being too paranoid or is this normal behaviour for a young hammie who’s just moved home? If you know any remedies please let me know!
Thank you!
Harry

Re: Hello from London
Hi & welcome to the forum
I saw you posted the same questions in another thread so I'll just be brief & say making snoring type noises in her sleep are most probably nothing to worry about.
You do need to upgrade your cage so you can give her more space & enrichment, until then don't put anything on the bars, it won't help & isn't good for them, for the time being try giving her a whimzee dog chew, the toothbrush is best, hams love them & it will help distract her from the bars.
Check out this thread for other ideas.
