Hi,I am a hamster mom.
Hi, I am Tania a mom of 2 hamsters. I have one female Syrian with the name Adelaide and she is 9 months old. My 2nd and the new child is a dwarf hamster and I adopted them two days ago, so they are still very mysterious. Those are all my pets at the moment and I cannot imagine my life without them. When I purchased Adelaide from Petsmart, I had no information about hamsters as I do now. I found out so many unfortunate truths about things, but I have done my best to give my hamsters an enriching home. Forums are an amazing resource I desperately needed to take care of my hamsters as I am still but only a teenager living with my parents without a job. So thank you 1000 times to all of my animal lovers out there. I think there should be a photo of my striking Adelaide.

Welcome. Adelaide looks lovely. Hope your new dwarves settle in well. If they share a cage you may find they need separating as they get older, so you should have a spare cage or storage box ready just in case.

Re: Hi,I am a hamster mom.
Thanks, but I would never put a syrian with a dwarf hamster. As that would be chaos, my 2 hamsters are in separate enclosures.

Re: Hi,I am a hamster mom.
Hi & welcome to HC
Adelaide is lovely!
Look forward to hearing more about her & your new dwarf ham.
ETA I just saw your question on another thread about letting your new ham settle in, you don't have to leave her entirely, you can begin to interact almost straight away just by being by her cage/tank & talking to her so she gets used to your voice, offer a treat or two, just a couple of seeds or a mealworm will do & if she doesn't come to you straight away just leave them & walk away for a while so she begins to associate you with nice things.
You can try doing the tissue trick, put some plain white toilet tissue up your sleeve for a few hours then shred it up & put it in the cage so she gets used to your scent.
She should get used to the lights being on soon enough.
Only introduce new foods slowly, go very easy with chia if you are going to give it, the tiniest bit, I wouldn't give rice & gradually get her used to veg.
She will most likely be a Russian hybrid & they can be prone to diabetes so avoid any kind of sugary treats, honey or dried fruits.

Re: Hi,I am a hamster mom.
@Cypher. Thanks, I just talked to her in her tank. I have and will continue giving her treats. A few minutes ago and she held my fingers. I have begun with the tissue trick, and I'll put that in her tank later tonight. From the shelter, the lady told me she was very sociable, so hopefully the taming goes well. I'm not sure about the food, because she has taken all of the food I've served. So she seems to like it. I'll check on how she reacts to the chia and rice so far to see if I should give it to her in the future.
