Re: Hello from darkest Surrey
Lol - I meant an empty one ha ha. A four foot fish tank can make a good hamster habitat but you'd need a lid making out of mesh and wood. I prefer cages anyway - not just for the ventilation but you can do a lot with them and attach things to the roof and bars, and access tends to be better for interaction.
Have you got a cage yet? If not Zooplus is a good place to look. The Barney, Alexander and Alaska are all good and popular. Also the Savic Hamster Plaza. All are good for a Syrian - or were you thinking of a dwarf hamster? Just add lots of substrate and an 11" wheel for a Syrian And a few cardboard tunnels and toys.

Re: Hello from darkest Surrey
Hello and welcome to HC! I'm so happy that you are planning on getting your son a hamster. They make great pets, and I'm sure he will love him/her very much. Good luck and have fun finding the perfect home for your new ham. I look forward to getting to know the little one and seeing pics whenever he/she is settled in. Hee-HEE! Having a pet water vole sounds to be great fun, too. Maybe that could be your family's pet in the future, lol.
