Question Myachick and Dumpling Say Hi to You!!

Hi, I am the owner of my two Syrian Hamsters and this is my first post in our community!

They are around 3.5 months old and they are brothers. I bought Myachick when he was 4 weeks old and I have spent a lot of time with him already. Dumpling, I bought him when he was 2.5 months old and he appears a bit unfamiliar with me compared to Myachick.

They are both cute and smart. Myachick was sleeping in my pocket daily when he was young and he is extremely gentile towards me. Dumpling is a cute little guy who is a bit shy and whenever I rub his belly he uses his front paw to push my finger away.

There are a few questions I am a bit concerned about them:
1. Myachick feels extremely soft when I touch him, feels like he does not have strong ribs, is it normal? (his behavior appears normal)
2. Dumpling keeps biting the cage bar and hair on his nose is ripped off. Though skin is not affected, I am still concerned. Is there any way to prevent him from bitting it?
3. Recently, they are grooming their penis when they wake up, is it normal? Should I find girlfriends for them?

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Myachick and Dumpling are so cute, great names too.
How do you know their brothers, you bought them separately and at different times?
You say their grooming their willies when they wake up, are they in the same cage?
If so, then you need to separate them.
It's perfectly normal for them to groom themselves when they wake up.
Every ham is different, so they won't feel the same.
To prevent Dumpling biting the cage bars, try weaving cardboard thorough the bars, he'll spend time trying to pull out and this can be off putting for them. I've had quite a few bar chewers and the cardboard works. I've also clipped a small bendy bridge and that worked also.

Hi & welcome to HC

Your boys look lovely & sound very cute!
No idea about Myachick feeling soft & not having strong ribs, without actually feeling him it's not really possible to comment but it does sound as though he's doing fine.
Chewing bars can be down to a number of reasons, the cage may be too small or lacking in enrichment, it can also be attention seeking behaviour, it is important to try to stop it though as it can lead to damage to teeth & the area around the nose & mouth.
Have a look here for some ideas.
Managing Bar Chewers
The grooming behaviour is totally normal, don't even consider getting them a girlfriend! Breeding is not something to be taken lightly & as you don't know their history or genetics could lead to all sorts of problems for mother & pups. They really don't need a friend at all.

Hi and welcome to HC, SunnyOy! Congrats on giving Myachick and Dumpling their forever, loving home with you. They are so adorable, and I look forward to getting to know them. I totally agree with what other members have suggested so there is no point in repeating. Have fun with your two cute hamfellows, and PLEASE do keep them separate and do not have them with a female.

Hey Thin Lizzy, thank you for your reply!
I knew they are brothers since when I first went to the pet store, they were just 4-5 weeks old and I picked Myachick. Since then I was visiting the pet store and those Syrians every weekend. After one month and half, only Dumpling was left in the tiny pet store aquarium. So I decided to take him too, cuz I don't want this little creature to be a left-over.
And no, they are in different cages and each of them has 2 cages connected to sleep and play.
Actually we did put cardboard and bridge against the cage bars, but being destructive as Dumpling the blocks just don't work. He can literally destroy the whole cardboard within an hour! So we have decided to give him two cages to prevent him from being bored. Luckily, that works!

Hey cypher, thank you for your reply.
Your judgement is pretty precise of the situation. Dumpling did feel bored and wanted to seek for attention. In that case, we connected another cage to his current one. And it works pretty well. I had the same worries that his skin might get scratched by the bar if the bar was not smooth.
Thanks again for your advice, it is really helpful!

Hey dreamtree, thank you for your reply and your welcome full of warthm!
After realizing he was just bored, I connected another cage for him to play around and the problem has been solved.
They are in different cages and each of them has 2 connected cages. I assume it is pretty enough for now.
I placed the 4 cages together in one corner of my place, and they smell each other and get used to each other.

Here is the video of Myachick dreaming in my hand and he got waken up by his own unconscious squeak, if you have interest in watching it

Aww, Myachick looks so precious and cute snuggling in your hand as he slept. It was the sweetest thing ever; I'm so sorry that he had a bad dream but luckily you were right there to comfort him again. What a wonderful bond the two of you share; he is so content surrounded with all of your love and gentleness. Thanks for sharing the video.

Hey dreamtree, thank you for your kind words, they are really comforting me so much!
I am curious that both of my hamsters they are 5 months old and they are around 135g~140g, but their sizes are around 6-7 inches. Are they within the normal range of size and weight? It is so strange that when I touch them while they are sitting and grooming, I could clearly feel their spins and butt bones! I was scared and feel that they are not doing good since I have read so many threads saying you should not feel their back bones.
I feed both of them 8 pallets of oxbow in the morning individually and some broccoli of size as a ping pang ball. And in the evening when they wake up, I feed them some treats including raw unsalted sun flower seeds, pumpkin seeds, 2 nail-big pieces of dry carrot, some pecan nuts of nail size, and 5 pallets of oxbow. I don't think I feed them too little, and I even think I feed them a little much. Of course they eat all of the food and treats. But still, I can CLEARLY feel their back bones and spins.
Should I go to the vet so see what is going on? Or is it completely normal??
