I use the 4 oz & fill it to the top for better suction for my dwarves, my Syrian uses a bowl.

I don't know how big your water bottle is? It's good to fill it to the top to prevent dripping or leaking. So if you can get ahold af a 4 oz bottle, that would be better

Check the ball of the nozzle nightly or daily to see if water is easily flowing water. I check it just before they get up. xx

A hamster isn’t going to drink much per day, so it doesn’t really matter, especially if you are changing the water daily. I just fill tge bottle up most of the way. Just be careful not to fill it right to the top as sometimes this can lead to the bottle not releasing water (not sure why - something to do with a vacuum maybe?).

Really? Huh, I used to think that but then I read on here that filling it up too much was what did it! Now I don’t know what to believe lol. Fortunately, I always check the bottles to make sure they are working and I have 2 just in case one goes wrong.

Generally, the mechanism works best when the bottle is filled to the top. It's just the science, although I personally forgot why. I think it works fine when not fully filled too though.

To answer the OP's question, hamsters drink less than a teaspoon worth of water daily. Only about 5 milliliters, with females tending to drink a slight more. So generally, you only technically need 1-2 oz bottles. However, whether you fill it all the way or not, is up to you

I've never worried about the science & maybe it varies from one type of bottle to another but with the classic bottles that most in the UK tend to use they definitely work better if not filled right to the top & sometimes don't work at all if totally full.
