Pork and Beans
Hi!
I've been lurking on these forums for a while now and have posted a few times, but I wanted to introduce my two new russian dwarf hams, Pork and Beans :P
It's my first time attempting to to keep cohabiting hamsters so I'm a little nervous and constantly checking on them like a paranoid hamster mum, but they are so cute and small.
Anyway, any advice on keeping two hamsters together happily and safely is appreciated. I've researched a fair amount but I'm still a little unclear on what behaviour to look out for when they socialise with each other.

Re: Pork and Beans
Hello and welcome! Congrats on Pork and Beans
Just remember to have two of everything, wheels, bottles, hides, etc. Also ensure hides have multiple exits so neither of your hand can corner one another That's about all I can offer in terms of tips. Good luck, and if you ever have any questions, please ask!

Re: Pork and Beans
Aw! they are lovely
As Drago said two of everything & no levels or areas they can easily become territorial over are important to try to keep them living happily together.
Behaviour to look out for is generally a big difference in character, if one is out a lot but the other is usually hiding away that can be a sign that bullying may be going on also if you see one chasing the other a lot, a big difference in size/weight/condition can mean that one is preventing the other from getting sufficient food.
Squabbling is normal to some extent but if squeaks or screeching become frequent, louder or really high pitched then small squabbles may have reached the point where they have fallen out & need to be separated.
It's not easy to describe how things might change but as you get to know them it becomes easier to know if they are both happy or not really.

Re: Pork and Beans
They are lovely. Hope they don't fall out. But if they do they will be fine living in separate cages.
Hides are best with two exit holes when keepin two together. This way one can't trap the other in. Bendy bridges or reptile wood arches are good for hides.

Re: Pork and Beans
Lovely hammies. I hope all goes well! As has been said, two of everything will be needed. Make sure you have a second cage ready to hand in case you do have to separate them. I've heard that the moment blood is drawn, you must put them in different cages.

Re: Pork and Beans
Jamskin, hello and welcome to HC. Congrats on Porks and Beans; they are absolutely adorable. I hope that they will be able to remain together, but it will be wise to get another cage just in case you have the need to separate them immediately as April Pearl had mentioned. I love both of their names; they are such humorous together, lol! Eros wave a tiny paw.
