New Syrian hamster help
I just got my new hamster today.
She's called Harley the hamster.
6 weeks old.
From a small private pet shop.
She's a creamy grey double tap colour and totally beautifull.
So chilled out she fell asleep in her travel box.
Was put in her amazing new cage at 3pm.
Scratched around went to the toilet and then found her bed and hasn't been out since!!!!!
Have I found the most laid back hamster ever ?!

Re: New Syrian hamster help
Congrats on Harley
This sounds quite normal, some will spend time out & about exploring the cage when you bring them home others will tend to find somewhere to hide away & sleep not coming out much until night.
Give her a few days to settle in & make herself at home.

Re: New Syrian hamster help
Congrats on Harley! She does sound beautiful and I hope to see some pictures. She may be quite laid back, as none of the pet shop hams I have had have fallen asleep in their carriers on the way home - on the contrary, most went wild trying to dig out. However, my breeder ham slept all the way home in his carrier when we went to collect him.
As for the sleeping in her cage, I have found that all of the hamsters I have ever brought home during the day will go quickly to sleep as they are still babies and 3pm is like 3am for them! So, this is totally normal and she will be out at night.
As Cypher says, give her some time to herself. I'm sure her personality will become clear as you get to know her.

Re: New Syrian hamster help
I've had a few pet shop hams fast asleep in the carrier by the time I got them home so I don't think it's any more unusual than the ones that are manic & digging like crazy the whole time really!

Re: New Syrian hamster help
My breeder hamster was going out of her way, trying to get out of the carrier. With time I just realized that it's her personality. She does not like being restrained and wants adventures all the time. However, when we brought her home, it was also at about 3pm, she just explored a bit and went to sleep until evening, waking up at about 7pm and continuing her exploration. I think it doesn't matter how the hamster behaves in the carrier, when they're brought to a new place in the middle of their sleeping time, it's pretty normal for them to go and catch up on their beauty sleep.

Hi Miffy and welcome to HC. Congratulations on Harley, she sounds adorable. She'll no doubt give her new home a good sniff, scratch and rub herself against everything to make it hers.
