Good idea, AprilPearl! I never thought of that!

Oxalis
Rumex

Can anybody tell anything from these? I know the quality is kind of bad, but could somebody try and help? Even in person, I can't see things well enough to have much confidence and I have zero experience with this.

Also really shocked at how willingly both of them went into the cup! We didn't have any containers that gave a clear enough view, so I snatched a wide mouthed glass from the kitchen cupboard and they both seemed really eager to crawl into it for some reason, even after having to do it a billion times because the pictures kept turning out blurry and I ended up having to upload two videos.

Hmm, from looking at the videos I think that Oxalis is a female and Rumex is a male ^^
Rumex is very furry so it's hard to see but I think I can make out two holes there!
Oxalis is harder since they keep moving around, but their end doesn't seem to be tapered or bulge out as much as a males so I am guessing they are a female.

Hi and welcome to HC.
Good on you for standing your ground with your mum about separate cages.
Your hams are so cute.
Looking forward to seeing their new homes when you get them.

Hello and welcome to HC!

Sorry to hear your mum sprung this upon you. A detolf is a great cage for a Russian dwarf. It's plenty spacious and can hold loads of stimulation! Looking forward to updates

Hi and welcome!

I can so understand the struggle you're facing with your mom! I had to deal with my mom too actually, when I decided to buy better stuff for my hammies after my research.

But, you know, you're doing this because you love your hamsters and you just want the best for them, therefore I think you're doing a really great thing in the end.

I can't wait to hear from you and your hammies again!

Welcome to HC! Don't worry, as FelicityAnn said, we've all made mistakes (younger me's first Syrians were in Rotastak cages or in 30 x 50cm cages!)

Your hamsters are so cute and I can't wait to read more about them! I'm sure they'll love their detolf too, there's a lot of really cool set ups I've seen people make with it!

They're from a pet shop so they're definitely both hybrids which means they can't much fruit or any hamster treats containing, fruits, honey, or sugars. They can have a very small amount of fruit occasionally (something like apple) but only very occasionally. They can eat small amounts of vegetables, mealworms, and chicken though Russian's also LOVE Whimzees dog chews and they're great for stopping their teeth from overgrowing.

The best food for them is Burgess Dwarf Hamster food but I think you'd have to order it online?

Hi and welcome to HC, Kumys! Congrats on getting Oxalis and Rumex. I'm glad that you decided to become a member of our forum. You never have to be concerned that anyone will bite your head off for you making a mistake. No one is perfect, and the important thing is that we are trying our very best and learn from our mistakes. I'm so sorry that the pet store misled you and your mum concerning the best brand of food and the correct size of cage. I know that must be quite frustrating for both of you. I am glad that your two hammies are no longer in the same cage, and they will be getting an upgrade on their cage size soon. BTW, don't be upset with your mum, I'm sure that all of this hamster care is a learning process for her, too, and she wants you and both hamsters to be happy. She may not have anticipated purchasing new cages as soon because it was a shock to her as well, and the pet store did a disservice to both of you in misinforming you at the time of your purchases. It sounds like she is trying to make you happy by having you enjoy caring for and loving two great hammies; that is why she purchased them for you in the first place. She deserves grace to be given to her as well, so don't be frustrated and realize that this should be a wonderful experience for the two of you to share together.

I look forward to updates on your hammies and seeing more pics of them and their new lovely cage setups. Have fun and good luck with the taming process. Eros says, "Hi!" and waves a paw to all of you.
