We have had quite a day today. All the hamsters have had something weird going on today.
We are learning that Tiki is a VERY private lady. Once she got upgraded to the detolf she stopped being cage territorial. She is still territorial though, it's just concentrated on houses and burrows. I had the "privilege" today of seeing a fully defensive screaming Tiki. Paws up mouth open and everything. I do not want to see that again! I am a very forgetful person and I have anxiety, so when I take Tiki out and go to put her back, and seconds later I can't find her anywhere, I get genuinely afraid that I forgot to put her back.
I try respecting her privacy and not lift anything, but I can't get her to poke out anywhere. I just cleaned out her tunnel, so I knew she couldn't have dug down, she had to be in a house somewhere. I gently lifted her main house, and immediately she started screaming and she was in the defensive pose already when I spotted her. The screaming slowly decreased as soon as I put the house back down.
I left a treat outside her house and left the room for a moment to give her space. When I came back, about 5 minutes later, she was out for a run in her wheel. I very slowly offered her a sunflowerseed and then my hand. She climbed on like nothing happened, with absolutely no hesitation. We have seen this behavior before, but never with the full screaming and pose.
I have never seen anything like that! It's going to take a lot of practice to never invade her personal space. She is so different compared to our other hamsters!

Tiki got out! She got under the couch and has definitely eaten stuff. I saw her eat an old salted peanut, anything else is unclear. She has already been caught, luckily, and put in a bin for now with her wheel and some toys and food in the hopes that she empties her pouches in there. I doubt we can force her to empty her cheeks, she is not tame enough. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Just catching up on Tiki's thread. Sorry that you had that experience of her great escape under the couch. I know it must have been quite scary for you especially since she managed to pouch a salted peanut before you could stop her. Most likely everything should be fine. Good luck, and Tiki please don't scare your mum like that again, alright?

Good to hear she took the sunflower seed and climbed onto your hand.

Escapes are always stressful. Relief you managed to catch her.

A pile of tissue or a tube may be enough to get her to unpouch whatever she has stored in them. You then need to get her out again. Good luck with that.

I think she ate it unfortunately. Would have been so much better for her if she had just pouches it.

It's 2 days later now and she still seems fine so I think we got lucky.

I have noticed though, unrelated, that she makes a movement that looks a bit like she tries to push something out of her pouch often when she grooms. She did it before the escape as well, so I don't think it has anything to do with that.

She doesn't seem to have been effected by eating it then.

The pushing her pouch movement could be part of the washing process.

Keep an eye on it though. In case something is stuck in her pouch.
