Congratulations on your new hamster. Not sure of the colour. You may want to add a border around the bottom of the cage so you can have deeper substrate for digging without it falling through the cage bars.

The cage needs a solid floor too. It looks like is has a mesh floor, which can cause your hamster to get bumble foot, which would be painful for your hamster.

A dark nesting box is needed. A upside down box with a hole cut in it would do.

Some chewable toys, cardboard tube and a flat flat form could be added.

thanks for your advice. actually i have kept a large plastic tray on the bottom of the cage which fits. so i have kept the substrate and other thing on the tray so no worries of it to get a bumble foot.

but there is a problem. its bites the bars often. the area of the cage is above 360 sq in. and i have kept a proper sized wheel, some toys and even a digbox. but it didnt stop biting the cages. what to do?

Hi and welcome!!

Fred is gorgeous!

CMB pointed out perfectly the problems of the bird cage. Maybe adding enrichment could stop the chewing problem. Starting by putting a deeper layer of substrate could help, as a lot of hamsters like to burrow. I don't know the size of the wheel, but being a syrian Fred will need at least a 20 cm wheel, you could add dow chews as whimzees, tunnels as loo rolls and other things that could keep him away from the bars.

You can also take a look at this thread Managing Bar Chewers

He is very cute - I would say either a Dove or a Mink banded long haired hamster you have there.

if you have a look at the Show us your cages thread. You will be able to see lots of ways to setup a cage.

You could use the ideas to make Fred's cage better for him. As you change the cage show the photos so we can offer other suggestions.
