Default Hello from Harry!

Hi, we're new! We live in Hampshire, England, and Harry is our lovely Syrian hamster. He presently lives in a home-made home, there's nothing wrong with it but I've ordered a Hamster Heaven after looking at all the reviews on this site. It's arriving next week.
Now - the question of the wheel!!! Which wheel will fit in a Hamster Heaven? It would need to be as quiet as possible, as he's in my bedroom!
His present wheel is a Savic Giant Rolly, and he adores it. It seems to be aimed at degus and rats which I didn't notice until after I'd bought it, but Harry loves it so that's all that matters. Would it fit in the new home do you think?
Will add some photos as soon as I can work out how...!
Have a great bank holiday everyone!
Linda

Hello Linda and welcome to HC Harry looks gorgeous

I have the hamster heaven but I can't really advise on wheels I'm afraid as my hams are dwarfs so a bit smaller that your Harry.

I think you need a 12 inch wheel for Syrians. I have the 9 inch silent runner wheel which is pricey but very quiet and safe. I have their wheels mounted on the bars and it is very close to the top of the cage so I think you would have to have it sitting on the base of the cage with lower substrate and a bendy bridge or something to stop them blocking it with substrate. I'm sure someone with more experience with Syrians and wheels will be able to give you some better tips though

Hi & welcome to HC
Harry looks really sweet there

I have the HH & a 9" silent runner too, there is barely enough space for substrate even with the 9" wheel tbh, some smaller syrians will be ok in a 9" wheel but many do need something larger like the 12" & you really wouldn't have space in the HH, it might be worth looking at some other cages, the Barney, Alexander & Alaska cages on zooplus are all good cages with that bit more height allowing for a better size wheel without having to lose out on substrate.

Welcome to HC! I have a HH cage although I upgraded my Syrian to a barney. I didn't use any of the bits and pieces that came with the HH in the end. That clear out allowed space for the senior Wodent Wheel which is a good sized wheel for a Syrian. I think it is 11 inches. You can stand it on the base and keep substrate away or cable tie it to the roof of the HH ( my daughter did this with hers)

Hello and welcome to HC!

As others have mentioned, you should shoot for a 12 in wheel with Syrians. 10.5 inches is the smallest I'd ever recommend going, but 12 in is really the most comfortable for a Syrian. The best wheel out there would be the 12 in silent runner. If you can get hold of it, that would be ideal. Some other good wheels are the Trixie, wodent, and CSE wheels. Good luck and if you ever have any other questions, please ask

Thank you all for your greetings and your suggestions. Very useful.
Harry continues to delight - his favourite things in life are carrots, broccoli, baby corn, cardboard tubes, and his wheel.
What a fantastic forum, I especially love all the pictures! It's so difficult getting a good picture when they move so fast - I've got a massive collection of blurred images of what could perhaps be a hamster!

Hello and Welcome to Hamster Central.
Harry looks very sweet sitting in his bowl!
The hamster heaven is a similar height to my previous cage (Ferplast Mary) and I could just fit an 11" Trixie wheel inside (although the side of the cage where the wheel was the substrate had to be really shallow for it to fit in).
Most of my photos of my Pumpkin are always blurred or she decides to walk out of the photo as I'm taking it - normally a bribe of their favourite treats helps them to sit still long enough for a photo!
