Question Hello! Planning for a new hamster!

Hello, I love hamsters! lol and I'm excited to be here! So I have owned hamsters in the past and love them and had a great time with them. I feel that I am ready for another hamster, but things have changed since my last hamster. This is what I mean, my room is downstairs and we used to have a really bad spider and insect problem in my room and in the house. My dad purchased these plugs in the house that send sound waves that scare off spiders and rodents. It solved the spider problem, but now I can't have a hamster because they will hear it. I really love animals and especially hamsters. I feel comfortable owning one, I know what to do and I know how to care for them. Of course i learn things everyday to be a better owner. I know that their are special needs hamsters. I have owned a special needs hamster before and loved him sooo much! His name was Achilles. Like the Greek myth because his left foot was deformed, but he was so crazy and adventurous, I miss him. And he also had a honey bear coat, so i always thought of him of a blonde like Brad Pitt that played Achilles in Troy. Anyways I know that there are deaf hamsters that people don't buy and that pet stores don't even bother to sell. I would really like to know what you guys think of getting a deaf hamster that would not be able to hear the plugs and that i can provide a great, fun life for. I wanted to check before I went through with getting a deaf hamster. I know their different to care for, but I know i'm ready to have a little hamster baby and take care of it and save it from any pet stores just getting rid of it because its deaf. so yeah any advice? Thank you very much and im looking forward to this

Hello and welcome to HC, Daysiebee. I am so sorry for the loss of Achilles. I am sure he was as precious as can be, and I love the name (and references to Brad Pitt and the Greek god, too). I wish that I could be of more help to you, but I am not knowledgeable concerning what all the effects of the sound wave pest deterrent may be. Does it just bother them if they hear it, or does it do any other things to deter them? I would be scared to adopt any hammy if the device is used to deter rodents. However, if it's just the sounds that are being annoying to hammies that hear normally, I suppose it may not do a deaf hammy any harm. I could definitely understanding you wanting to save a deaf hammy from being disregarded or killed at pet stores, but I would DEFINITELY do much more research on the matter though because you wouldn't want to risk harming or stressing any new hammy with this device. Isn't there any other, better solution to the pest problem? I have never had to use this type of device to rid my home of any pests thankfully. I wish you and your potential hammy tons of luck in finding the perfect solution for you, the pest problem, and any hammy you may want to adopt in the future. If it were me though, I would just wait until I no longer have to utilize the sound wave repellent because I always like to air on the more cautious side in these matters. Although your heart may be missing having a hammy in your life currently, sometimes it is the most loving and truly selfless act of kindness to wait until all of the conditions are right before bringing a furry friend into your forever home. Sometimes, even the manufacturers of products such as these devices may not even know all of the consequences for hammies until later, and that may be too late for your little one. My Eros (also like the Greek god - although in a female form) also sends a whisker kissie your way.

Hi & welcome to HC

Achilles sounds like a lovely little ham man, I can imagine how hard it must be to be without a hamster now & how much you must miss having a little one to love.

I really wouldn't recommend having any hamster while you still have the sonic repellants in use. they are really distressing to rodents even from quite a distance away & you could never be sure if a hamster was totally deaf & unable to hear within that range.
I would wait until either you no longer need to use the plugs or find another way to deal with the spiders & other insects that are causing the problem.
