Default Greetings from a German Hamster Rescue!

Hi friends!

I've mostly been a quiet observer ever since I signed up here, but I thought I'd introduce myself anyway.

I grew up with hamsters and for a few years now, I have been rescuing unwanted and abandoned hamsters of all species.

My own hamsters are always foster hamsters that I cannot rehome for health or age reasons, or nobody wants.

They have cages from Nagerhuetten.de and Zooplus (120x80 Living World Eco Habitat). Almost everything in my hamster homes is DIY and every one of my hamsters has their own little individual set-up based on their needs.

I have a seperate hamster room in which my hamsters are completely undisturbed and can enjoy their peace and quiet. This immensely contributes to their well-being up until old age. Two of my hamsters (Syrians) are over 3 years old at the minute. Fingers crossed for a few more healthy months!

It's very important to me that the hamsters I foster go to knowledgeable adoptants who can provide them a home with plenty of space and enrichment. This isn't always an easy task, especially if a female surprises me with babies after a few days, but I'm glad I can do my part to help hamsters in need, because sadly there are always plenty.

Good on you for rescuing hamsters!
Most of the animal rescues around me (and by most, I mean 99%) won't accept any hamsters, which makes me wonder where owners that don't want their hamsters anymore put them....It's not an uncommon thing at the pet stores to find a hamster running around in the parking lot.
Welcome!

That's so sad.

Shelters in my area usually do take in hamsters, but I wish they would immediately refer them to private rescues as the workers know nothing about hamsters and keep them in the smallest of cages with nothing in, so it's never really an improvement from their previous homes.

Unlike private rescues, they couldn't care less about who takes them either. I honestly don't see the point in taking in an animal, only to re-home it to a home equally as bad as the previous one. Or worse, even.

I've taken in some hamsters who were abandoned outside in the past and they turned out okay, but at least they were contained. I think once a hamster is actually outside on its own, unless found immediately, its chances of survival are very slim.

Someone brought me a white hybrid boy with a permanent defect to his central nervous system (similar to backflipping) yesterday. They had kept him in a cage less than 30x30 cm.

Of course I can't re-home him as his illness causes him to be blind, deaf and run around in circles, but if I hadn't taken him I don't even want to know where the poor little guy would have ended up. His name is now Fabius and I hope he has a bit more time to finally enjoy the life he deserves.

Welcome to HC Happy & your Happy Hamily!

Sounds as though you're doing a great job for all those hams needing help, hope little Fabius is able to enjoy life in his own way now he's found his way to you.

Happy welcome to HC!!

It's so nice of you to rescue all those hams!

The page where you bought your cages looks fantastic! I would love to see your set ups!

being german I'm sure you could teach us a lot of hamster care, at least you are known for being very careful with hamster needs

Looking forward to know more about your hamily!

It will be super interesting to find out more about German hamster keeping - it does have a rather good reputation!

Hallo Glück und Familie, ich denke, was du für verlassene und unerwünschte Hamster tust, ist fantastisch.
I hope I have gotten that right as my German is very very rusty indeed, I had to look up what abandoned was.
As I said I think you are doing a wonderful thing for your charges.
