Old Hamster Keeper
Hi there. I've had a pet hamster for various times in my life and my very first when I was 10. Though the standards were very poor for small caged creatures back then and people did not know as much as they did now, she thrived and lived nearly four years under my care. I miss her very much.
Many years have passed and now my children are around that age and we have a family hamster. We try our very best to give him the best life possible. I'm here to learn more to improve his quality of living and our relationship. We love him!

Hi
I know what you mean. I had 2 hamsters when I was a child and although they were clean, well fed and had lots of handling they lived in an awful Rotastsck cage. I can't believe they still make them these days - pretty much same design too.
My children and 7 and 4 and a hamster joins our family in two weeks time. I'll be honest though - he's pretty much going to be my pet  .... although the children will be very hands on with him.
He's going to be super spoilt with a lovely large cage, the best wheel and the best food I csn get him.... I'm pleased knowledge has advanced since those old days but. As I say they fact people are still sold tiny cages saddens me.

Hi and welcome, I have only been on this forum for about a week but have learned so much in that time, I am so glad I joined as it has confirmed my thought about how much space my hammie should have, but also the best type of bedding to put in his home (cage), when I was younger it would be just sawdust and then soft bedding in their houses, so much has changed over the years lol
