I am considering a playpen but need to find one and get more toys for him to go in it, which i'm going to do over the next couple of weeks

I have a few cardboard boxes I am going to try and make a temporary playpen with in the meantime and make him some toys with cardboard tubes etc.

would any of these be more suitable?

Carefresh honestly isn't that good to begin with,so I wouldn't waste money on that.Fitch is much cheaper and has superior quality The Tumblefresh is equally overpriced, and you would only need Fitch and toilet tissue/paper rather than spending extra money without needing to!

Definitely purchase directly from Fitch rather than trying to order it off Amazon. You can get even larger amounts than the single 20kg bale and save even more money if you could store larger amounts, but the 20kg size is still a decent value and should last a while anyways

will get some ordered this week , I know the exercise ball isn't the best solution at the moment but when I put him back in his home after being in it he seems to keep trying to get out, it wouldn't hurt for a few days for him to run in the ball for 10-15 minutes a time would it?

That cage would be okay, but on the small side for a Syrian. It's only around 560 sq inches and a bit pricey for a cage that size. The Alaska/Barney are both excellent cages for Syrians and I've never heard a complaint about them from those who have used them. Bins and DIY cages are best for Syrians in my opinion. Syrians really do thrive when kept in cages over 1,000 sq inches and it's really difficult to find suitable storebought cages. In the end it's your choice, but that's just my two cents!

Do you happen to have a bathtub/shower in your house (or apartment/flat)? For Syrians, you can use a tub as a temporary play area. Fill it with boxes, huts, and tunnels, and hide treats all around. You may also want to lay a towel down so your ham doesn't skid all over. This would be a much better alternative to the ball as you're really not getting any stimulation out of it to be honest. Much better to allow free roaming or a safely converted tub

whichever I get I would still use his existing cage and connecting the 2 via a tunnel to give him more room, I do have a bathtub but have mobility problems so use a stairlift to get up and down the stairs, think i will order the alaska one this week, can you buy the attachments to enable new tunnels to be fitted to outside of the cages?

Hi Lucy, the Alaska is a great sized caged for the money with a really good big front door. I have the cage myself. There would be no possible way to connect your current p@h cage to the Alaska and really there would be no need with a decent sized cage you wouldn't need to do that. You are much better to provide one big living space as has already been said. Seeing as you haven't had your current cage long I would see if you could return it stating that it is too small or if not you could keep it as a travel cage so it will get used. Hope this helps.

I have just measured and the alaska is bigger than I thought , is there just 1 door at the front as on the picture it looks like 2, but that could just be my eyes playing, how far up do you fill with substrate?

could I see a picture of yours to see the setup if possible?

Edit: nevermind the question about the doors, didn't realise there were more pictures lol

I don't have the Alaska so I can't offer advice on the door thing, but it seems you've figured that out. Fill the entire base with bedding! Go crazy, the more bedding, the better Syrians should have a bare minimum of 8-10 inches, but 12+ is really best for them considering their large size. I'm sure your ham will love the new cage, please share pictures of the setup when you're all done!
