Default Hello everyone

Hi everyone thanks for welcoming me to the community
My name is Jessica I am almost 26 years
I have 2 children age 5 and 2 years
I live in the north west of England
I have a degree in zoology and have owned hamsters most of my life

There's been:
Harry - he lived to be 4!
Coco - he died of cold, we lived in a house without central heating and it was a harsh winter one year
frosty - an albino, he lost a finger when my friend trapped it in the cage door. He would escape at night and get into bed with me!
Stuart - albino I rescued from a relative who did not take care of him well. He lived a good life but lost one eye (no idea how) and eventually died of wet tail
Kaybill - lovely hammy who died of old age
Kevin - I went to America for the summer come back and he had developed huge tumours in his kidneys.
He eventually got so old and frail even with antibiotics, one night he fell in his own urine and got stuck on his back...i washed him but his fur and skin was so bad from it and he deteriorated. He had to get put to sleep.
Desmond - my childs first pet. He died of old age.
Cookie - she was barely 1 when she died. Developed a tumour on her face and was euthanized.
Hesbie - current hamster, very friendly and healthy. Not even a year old.

I haven't owned any other pets apart from some fish as my mother was allergic but I now have a cat called errol.

I've only ever owned syrian hamsters

Being a single mother My life consists of housework and raising my children so I don't get much time for myself. I love introducing my children to animals and studied the therapeutic affects of animals on humans as part of my degree so I do find it very beneficial in many ways having pets as part of the family.

Thanks for letting me be a part of this forum and hope to learn a lot and share ideas here with you

Hello and welcome aboard!

I imagine it must be difficult being a single mother AND caring for Errol and Hesbie. It's good to hear you manage! Looking forward to learning more about your hams, past and present

Thank you
It is difficult to give hesbie the attention he deserves but I do try to handle him every evening at least.
Errol gets plenty of attention from my kids haha. And he really calms me down after a stressful day when he sits on my lap for cuddles.

Errol likes to sit on hesbies cage and they both stare at each other
I've been worried hesbie will be frightened but honestly he doesn't seem bothered. Errol will be moved away from the cage if I see him bugging hesbie too much and the hamster cage is kept in a separate room when im out or in bed where the cat cannot get to him.

I think its good in a way for them to see each other... kind of enriching? Although i know hamsters can die of fright from other pets so that was a major decision factor in me adopting him. So far so good.

Welcome to HC! My cat George is absolutely terrified of my hamster, Bambi my hamster is kept in my room so now George won't even come up the stairs. I'm glad your hammy and your cat seem to be better friends haha!

Welcome to HC, life can be hectic and making time for everything is difficult it is nice to hear that you still have room for hamsters in your life. Wonderful little creatures that they are

Lol how I WISH this was the case with my cat Belle she's a pest, I'm constantly chasing her from my room. Loves to sit at the cage waiting for Rosie to come out. Rosie doesn't seem at all bothered with her but I still don't like Belle doing it but Fudge was terrified of her. So I have him on the table off the floor and Rosie's cage is under the table.

Just had to say... You had a Kevin! My brother named his first hamster Kevin (at my suggestion), and I have never come across another Kevin hamster before

Kevin is a cool name for a hamster haha! He was named after Kevin McAlister from home alone 😂 but funnily enough my ex husband and childrens father is named Kevin too lol.

Thanks for the warm welcome 🖒
