Hello! New here:)
Hello everyone,
I came across the forum a number of times in the last couple of months while checking out information as we were quite new to hamsters in general. 'We' is me and my wife here in sunny Portsmouth plus Beni the hamster (named after Benidorm) who was initially purchased for my wife's uncle but it soon became apparent it wasn't an ideal environment so we took care of him in late February.
Unfortunately we had to make an emergency trip to the out of hours vet last night and sadly Beni had to be put to sleep but I'll leave that for a different thread. For now we want to concentrate on making sure we give the best possible home to whichever hamster comes into our lives next and we'll be taking our four year old niece to help choose a new one later this week as she had become quite attached to Beni.
Still very sad at the moment but looking forward to whatever comes next.

Hello and Welcome to HC.
My condolences about Beni, it's never easy making that decision. Big hugs.

Re: Hello! New here:)
Thanks for the welcome everyone, it's still a sad time but at least the vet said that our early intervention meant that his discomfort was ended before he started to suffer. We're now beginning to think about how to avoid such a premature demise with our next hamster so we'll be taking on board all the great advice being given on this forum.

Re: Hello! New here:)
Hi Matt, I'm sorry to hear about Beni.
This place is a great source of advice and guidance. I'm very new to it all after a break of 30 years so lots has changed. Sad to say back then my hamster care was rather limited.
We are awaiting our new hammys arrival in a few weeks. On paper he is a pet for my 7 year old and 4 year old children as they have been asking for one since last summer. In reality he will be my pet. I will rope them in for cleaning duties and hamster care as I think they need to know the responsibilities involved but really it'll be me doing it all - which suits me just fine.
Welcome to the forum - I'm sure you'll find it a great source of help as I do.

Re: Hello! New here:)
Welcome to HC, Pompey_Matt and wife! We are so pleased that you joined our wonderful community of hamster lovers, but I am truly sorry that it was under such terrible circumstances. I am definitely sorry for your loss and know it must be heartbreaking to lose your furry friend. However, going to the vet made Beni's suffering end which is the most humane thing you could have done. My heart goes out to you, your wife, and your little niece. Rest in peace, Beni. May you find restored health and run free over the Rainbow Bridge.
Good luck in finding a new hammy to love and cherish. I hope which ever one you choose has a long and adventure-filled life with you all. I look forward to reading about him/her whenever you get your special furry friend. Take care and don't ever hesitate to ask any questions that you may have. We all would love to help.
