My hamster ate chocolate!
HI I am new, my hamster escaped and I caught her nibbling on chocolate. It doesn't look like she has eaten very much, but I heard chocolate is very bad for hamsters. How can I make sure she is okay?

Re: My hamster ate chocolate!
You'll just need to observe her and if she shows signs of being unwell, take her to the vets. Yes it is supposed to be poisonous to them I believe, but a small amount shouldn't be a problem. If it is she will show signs of being unwell. Try not to worry. Main thing is to try and make sure she doesn't escape again now! Some cage doors can be easily opened by hamsters, so you may need to put a small padlock or a twist tie on it to secure it closed. Or she may have chewed a hole in the cage base. Do you know how she escaped? Human chocolate is bad for dogs too but our dog once climbed on a table and ate an enormous box of chocolates while we were out. He was sick afterwards but otherwise was ok.

Re: My hamster ate chocolate!
As Serendipity says all you can do is keep an eye on her & go straight to the vet if she shows any signs of being ill or abnormal behaviour that might suggest she's sick, she may well be ok if she only had a really tiny amount but chocolate is toxic to hams & being so small even a little can be dangerous.
Fingers crossed she'll be ok.

Dun worry! Odds are very good will live if still alive. It's more milk than chocolate for most brands anyway.
The killers are the bitter chocolates which causes instant liver failure!

Re: My hamster ate chocolate!
She is doing great! I was worried at first because she wasn't doing much for the next few hours, but she is fine. Its a relief. She is currently running around on her wheel as usual, thanks for the replies!

I have also gotten a new cage which is a much better make and she shouldn't be able to escape any time soon!

Why not share some pictures of her set up? We'd love to see and perhaps help give some suggestions
