Help!
Hey everyone my 1st time posting and looking for some advice! We purchased a new Syrian hamster from pets at home Friday evening for our kids and I've just came home tonight and the little thing is dead! I can't tell my kids and don't know what I should do with him. He has passed inside his little house any help would be appreciated! Feel so sad for him 😔

Re: Help!
Hello and welcome aboard! I'm so sorry for your loss. Are you sure he's passed? I know it may seem silly, but hamsters really are deep sleepers and this can sometimes be mistaken for death! Did he display any odd symptoms at all? As sad as it may be, I think you'll just need to be honest with your kids and tell them that he has travelled to another place and will no longer be with you. As for where to dispose of him, after you ensure he's dead of course (look for lack of breathing, rigor mortis, and a cold body), you can freeze his body (I know gross) until you're set on what to do. I have a small garden where I bury my hamsters, but you can also get them cremated if you choose to, though this is pricey and quite difficult. I'm so sorry for your loss, may he Rest In Peace

Re: Help!
Thanks for getting back to me I feel so sad and sick! He had been sleepy all weekend but I assumed he was just scared and unsure of his new surroundings and today he was out about 4:30 and I gave him a little stroke after he walked over to my hand when I had my hand sat in the cage and I went out and came back in not long ago and he was definitely dead he was hard and just looked asleep. I watched to see if any breathing for a while and nothing I've wrapped him in tissue and put him inside a shoe box, my kids are going to be devastated their first pet and they're only age 4 & 5. X

Re: Help!
Awe poor kiddos, I'm so sorry that you've had to experience such a sad thing in such a short period of time. I have found that young children (and even adults!) often feel better if they write a sort of "goodbye letter" to their passed pet so that they can feel happy knowing their pet feels loved. This is up to you and is always an option to use if they take it badly. My sympathies go out to you and your family and I hope you guys don't take it too hard.

When I lost my dog, and my hamster, I found that rainbow bridge poems and anecdotes helped me cope, I hope they can help you and your family!

Whether you decide to welcome another ham into your life is going to be based upon how ready you and your children are. However, if it helps any, hamsters dying suddenly and so soon, are not common events so you can rest assured that this was pretty unusual. Hamsters can be wonderful pets so having one around is always very rewarding. Calling the pet store sounds like it may be a good idea

Re: Help!
I'm so sorry to hear that.
Contact P@H and tell them, they'll probably ask you to bring him in. They may offer you another ham. Why he died could be something to do with his genetics, a stroke, tumour.
I wouldn't get another from the same lot, just incase it's genetic. Ask for your money back, this isn't the first time this has happened with P@H stores regarding hamsters, guinea pigs also.
I have to admit I've never gotten any hamsters from them due to hearing and reading things.
My local petshop where I've gotten all my hamsters over 16 years and never had any problems.
You could check to see if there are any breeders where you live or if you have a pet shop try them.
