Question Hello - new hamster owner here

Hi,

This is my first post here. In the fall, I adopted an abandoned baby winter white from a shelter and, surprisingly, I adored this beautiful little creature. I say "surprisingly" because hamsters are not common pets for older adults. I got so much enjoyment from taking care of this little animal. Despite excellent care, she died at less than six months of age. I tried to talk myself into getting some other kind of pet that is more common for adults to own, but couldn't resist getting another hamster. Yesterday, I brought home a Russian dwarf hamster who likes to sit in my hand. I am delighted with this little creature, too!

Are there other adults here who have the hamsters for yourselves and not for your children or grandchildren? I know no other adults with hamsters.

Hello Cotton and welcome to HC

Sorry to hear about your original hamster but congrats on you new Russian dwarf.

I got my first ever hamsters nearly 9 months ago now as an adult so you are not alone The only pets me or my hubby had ever had was fish so they were our first ever furry pets now we have 5 lol. I think hamsters make great pets for adults

Hi & welcome to HC

I'm sorry your first little Russian ham had such a short life but well done for giving her a new home when she needed it.
Congrats on your new ham, look forward to hearing more about him/her!

I think you might be surprised how many adults keep hamsters, many more than you may think & they probably make better pets for adults than they do for children.

I think there are quite a few adult Hamsterites on here Including some breeders and including me (although our Hamster went to the rainbow bridge last month). Ours was technically our 9 year old's but he ended up being mine lol.

Hello and welcome aboard! As others have said, a surprising amount of adults actually own (or are owned by) hamsters! There's absolutely no reason to feel that you're too old for a hamster as there's no such thing! Enjoy your new little ham and make sure to share pictures

Hi Cotton and Welcome to the forum.
Sorry to hear about your winter white dying so young.
Congratulations on your russian dwarf. Have you thought of a name?
There are many adults here (myself) that have hammies.

Hello Cotton, Welcome to HC.
Sorry to hear about the sad demise of your first little furry friend, but congrats on the ownership of your Russian Dwarf, what is he/she called?
Allegedly I am an adult but speak to Mrs R and she would clearly disagree, personally I am a fifty something trucker who has a Hamster as a pet who would ever give that credence??

Thank you, Rads, Thin Lizzy and Drago, for your responses. A 50 plus trucker with a pet hamster...that's awesome, Rads. I'm happy to read about all the adults here who have pet hamsters. After reading all your responses, it doesn't seem so odd anymore to be an adult with a pet hamster.

For those of you who asked about the name...I chose Zoey, but you know how names we choose don't always fit. I keep calling her "Little Bear".
