Hello and welcome. I did something similar. Our Syrian was for our 6 year old (now nearly 9). Deep down I wanted one myself But that was a bit subconscious to start with. I fell head over heels with him lol. And with doing most of the caring he sort of became mine.

Second the advice given by Inkypen. I would also recommend getting a potty litter tray. They will usually use one if it's put in the corner they choose as a toilet for peeing in. You just put the litter tray in that place with Chinchilla bathing sand in it. I used this one - it's a good size, not too big, not too small, easy for them to get in and out of and easy to empty.

Our Syrian had the Barney cage (eventually after being upgraded) and I think it's great. It's also a good buy as comes with a good sized corner house for nesting in and a shelf. I love the Alexander cage as well (comes with a long house that's good) although it can be trickier to find the best place to put an 11" or 12" wheel.
