Can a hamster have a mix between both short and long hair?
I've recent brought a new baby hamster who was in a litter with a mixture of long and short haired. But my Willow looks neither long or short haired and more 'fluffy' I would say😂 She has short hair but then lots of random bits of long hair and a very fluffy face. I will insert a picture of her. It doesn't really show her random long bits of hair but it shows her cute fluffy-ness. Also I've always owened Syrians and they've never been a struggle to tame, she's been my first female Syrian apart from a rescue I've had. She is more timid and shy, I've been feeding her treats from my hand and on my hand and have been stroking her which she doesn't mind. Ive also been lifting her from her box to my bed and letting her run on me but she is still terrified. She has peed on me and been chattering her teeth at me. Any ideas on whatcha else I can do to bond with her?

Re: Can a hamster have a mix between both short and long hair?
Hi and welcome to you and the lovely Willow. She looks to be a long haired hamster. Female long haired hamsters are sort of fluffy all over with slightly longer tufts behind the ears and at the back. It is only the males who have the really long 'skirt' at the back. The trained eye can spot a long hair carrier but in essence they look just like short hairs and not as fluffy as willow is. She looks to be an Umbrous golden in colour I think or maybe Golden.
You sound to be doing the right thing in taming her. She is still a baby so take time. Try taking her out in a box or ball then letting her walk over you in a dry bath for safety in case she gets skitty. Do lots of short hand to hand running sessions so she feels your hands round her and lots of lift and lay down practice.

Re: Can a hamster have a mix between both short and long hair?
Some hamsters who are long haired aren't quite as fluffy as others, it really just depends, souffle knows a lot more than me when it comes to genetics, and as they said, she is likely a long haired, but just not quite as fuzzy.
Keep it up with the taming, take it slow one step at a time. Young hamsters (that aren't from breeders) tend to be very skittish and moody. She will grow out of it and become a lovely little one, just be persistent with your taming and enjoy spending time with her!
