Hello, first timer here!
Hey everyone!
About a week ago I took in a pregnant hamster. I have owned rats before and I am a veterinary assistant yet I don't know much about hamsters. I am not sure how far along she is or if she really is pregnant. She's really fat, lol. Anyway, I have researched as much as I could and I think I got this. I would like to know if hamsters must live alone? Rats are social animals and I always had pairs so I'm curious.

Re: Hello, first timer here!
If the hamster is pregnant. The babies will be born after about 18 days. Clean the cage 3 days before due date and give plenty of nesting material. Don't disturb/handle the mother or pups before their eyes open and they leave the nest
Syrian hamsters are solitary and must be kept in individual cages. Robo hamsters, Campbell's hamsters, winter white hamsters can be kept in pairs (same sexed pairs from the same litter). They often need separate cages as they mature.

Re: Hello, first timer here!
If it is a dwarf and is single, leave it is as a single hamster as most pairs end up falling out anyway.
Good advice from CMB. I would have a little poke around some of the other accidental pregnancy threads as you will be able to pick up a lot of advice from those.
Good luck with the pregnancy!

Re: Hello, first timer here!
Welcome to HC & well done for taking on your pregnant ham.
As has been said some species can be kept in pairs or groups but they aren't social animals in the way that rats & mice are so most, even the dwarf hams tend to do better with a solitary life & syrians definitely need to live alone.
I don't know much about breeding but there are lots of threads with info on how to care for pregnant mums & pups, how long to leave them with mum, when to separate the males & females etc in the breeding section.
Good luck with them.

Re: Hello, first timer here!
So turns out she was pregnant after all!
She had her babies last night. Don't know how many as I don't want to disturb them.
