Talking Hello All! New here! Happy First Time Hamster Owner!

Hello everyone!

I'm new to Hamster Central so thought I would come and say hello!

I am a first time Hamster owner, I bought my baby Monty (a Black Banded Short Haired Male Syrian) a week ago and he is settling in nicely!

He is VERY timid and jumpy so I am beginning the taming process very slowly! So any tips would be helpful! I may start a thread on the taming section for this as this is more of a hello then a HELP!

But yeah! HI!

Thanks

Martyn

Hello and Welcome to Hamster Central. Congrats on your first hamster Monty.
A few tip I have in regards to taming is to go at your hamster pace - don't rush them and be patient with them as some can become tame fairly quickly whereas others take their time. To get Monty used to your scent I would recommend using the tissue trick - which involves putting white unscented tissues up your sleeve for a while, then tear them up and put them inside his cage so he can make his nest with them and he will find comfort in your scent.
I normally use a playpen for taming as I have had hamsters who are a little territorial of their cage to start with so I find it easier to use a playpen and when he starts to become confident being in the playpen you can sit in there with him and he can climb on you - a dry bathtub lined with towels can also be used instead of a playpen. Also wash your hand with unscented soap, to remove smells which he may associate with food.
I hope this will be helpful to you.

Hi & welcome to HC

Congrats on your first ham!
Take your time with taming, a week isn't long for Monty to adjust to his new environment & settle in, SKB has covered the basics so that should help but if you have any more questions just ask away.

Hello and congratulations on your first hamster Monty ! . I'm a first time hamster owner too - you have to gain your hamsters trust and don't rush taming them. It worked for our syrian boy who is now very tame. Hamsters are amazing little animals!
Erinsanimals and Hopping Hammy on YouTube have taming advice -I found them very useful. Might be worth checking them out. Plus your learn so much from HC -it's a great forum
