Was really nice to find this forum and I am seeking advice and more knowledge of hamsters.

Recently my son lost his Chinese dwarf hammy from old age last week (he's only 4, my son that is), and though he was obviously upset he took it very well.

But now of course he wants another hamster, but I'm just abit worried about him having such a small hamster again like the Chinese dwarfs. Though our last one was very friendly and let you handle him, I just worry that they are abit to small for someone as young as him to have.

When I was a child I had a Syrian hammy called Rolo and I can rememeber she was abit easier and bigger to keep hold of and look after.

Any suggestions or help would be most welcome

I'm so sorry for your loss of your Chinese hamster.

A Syrian Hamster might be a good option instead of another Chinese or a dwarf hamster, as they are a little easier to hold. A male Syrian might be also be better than a female, as they are normal a lot calmer and sit still more so might be more easier for your son to hold (as my current female and my past 3 have been fairly hyper, and rarely sat still, compared to my brother male who would sit in your hand for cuddles), but this also depends upon each hamster personality though.

If you could find a breeder near you, that would be a great place to start. Patro'n is my second female Syrian I have had and she is a doll. The breeder hand raised all babies so they were used to handling. I held 9 different ones both male & female, several times before I felt I connected with Patro'n. A good breeder will help your son through the process.
