Hello from a hamster noob
Hello there! I've been lurking and gathering a wealth of information since our Syrian, Chewie, arrived a month ago and thought it was time I actually registered. We are a family of first time hamster owners, so I am sure I'll continue to learn as I go.
If I can get the photo to attach, here's Chewie back on his first week with us (in his heavily padlocked because I don't trust the rickety doors with a 3 year old child cage - he is currently awaiting the arrival of his Alaska and lots of new stuff )

Re: Hello from a hamster noob
Hiya Wookie and Welcome to HC. Congratulations on your ham Chewie.
Is Chewie a bit like Houdin with the padlocked cage?
When his new Alaska cage arrives, be sure to hold back some of the old substrate and bedding so he has his smell with him and give him a good 3 weeks to settle in before you do a cage clean. Doing daily spot checks.

Re: Hello from a hamster noob
Hi Wookiee, welcome to the forum & congrats on your lovely new fluff
I'm sure Chewie will love the Alaska when it arrives, they can be a bit upset by cage changes (even when it's for the better!) so as Lizzy says make it as familiar as possible with substrate & nesting material from the old cage & he'll soon settle in there.
The Alaska has quite a nice deep base so you can really fill it with substrate for Chewie to have a good dig & burrow in!

Re: Hello from a hamster noob
Thanks for the welcome guys!
He went into his Alaska last night and he looked so happy and excited investigating everything. I think he likes it! Now I've seen him in it, I'm going to move a few toys around later and put in a sand bath.
Lol, the padlock is more for the benefit of my 3 year old and it's now on the front door of the Alaska for now, as the catch seems a little flimsy, even with the safety bar down.
