Default I'm a Newbie!

Hi! My name is Audrey. I just purchased, or should I say adopted, a Blueberry Russian Dwarf Hamster! Her name is Muffin . I am so in love with her already, so it's been hard to give her the 2-3 days of alone time.

Any new owner advice? I've done my research, and I am also an Animal Science/Pre-vet major, so I know general care of hamsters. I have also owned many pets in the past, large and small. But, I am always willing to receive more advice!! Any toys, handling, feeding (treats, food brands, etc.) advice?

Welcome to HC!

Believe me i know how hard is to keep our hands to yourself in the first days... take it slowly and you will see is worth in the end.
for the toys i can tell you that ether on youtube with erinHamsters ideas and here with DYI ideas you will have plenty of beautiful and smart ideas
Handling just give her time. put your hand slowly on the bottom of the cage and let her start coming and smell you dont try to grab her... she will be scared. keep some sunflower seeds are a treat they love it

Welcome again and show us some pictures of your hammie

Welcome to the forums your new hammy sounds lovely!

Dwarf hammies are more prone to diabetes so avoiding too much sugar in their diet is a good idea (for example; fruit, honey, commercial treats that contain a lot of sugar etc). I use dried mealworms and sunflower seeds with the shell on as treats for my little ham. Fresh veggies are also appreciated

I can also recommend ErinsHamsters on Youtube for some really helpful tips and tutorials on hamster care.

Welcome to the forum & the joys of dwarf hamsters!

I go along with what the others have suggested, I find sunflower, pumpkin seeds, freeze dried or canned mealworms & kitten kibble are favourite treats with mine but only a few, it is tempting to give a few too many when taming.
Just take your time with her & if there's anything you're unsure of just post a question & I'm sure you'll get lots of help.
