Question Richard eats his own poop?!

Hi guys im sorry I haven't been posting much but the WiFi wasn't working but anyway a couple of nights ago I caught Richard in his little nest house eating his food that he stored. I went up to his cage and I thought he was eating a sunflower seed but I looked closer and he was actually eating his own poop!!! Is this normal?!?

Unfortunately.

I just caught one of my hams eating that food 'direct from the source' .....I'm still a bit traumatized.

I haven't kissed him since then, either......

It's healthy for them, part of their nutritional needs, since they're 'hindgut fermenters. Or at least, so they tell us.....the little hams could be lying through their pointy little teeth.

Teeth which could use a good brushing if you ask me

Yes. It is quite normal. Rodents do two types of poo. The first is not as dry as what you see in the cage. The stuff you see is the 'second' poo. The first is still full of goodness for them so they eat it and then poo out what is left. Disgusting but true. This is how rodents get the full benefit of the nutrients they eat.

Humans are not that much different in one respect....two kinds of poo. Normal, and the one after Indian food.....

It's completely normal

Hamsters are coprophages (is that the right spelling? o.o), meaning they have poo as part of their natural diet. Rabbits, some species of pigs, and lots of varieties of insects are also coprophages.

Basically, since hamsters naturally have a rough foraging diet, high in difficult-to-digest plant matter, their digestive systems don't get all the nutrition out on the first go. So they eat it again to absorb as many nutrients as they possibly can. The dry pellets you normally see from hamsters are actually the second time it's passed through them.

This practice also helps introduce hindgut bacteria to their upper digestive systems, which is beneficial to the hamsters.

It's just how nature helps a hamster get as much nutrition out of a rough diet as it can.

You're not alone though; the first time I witnessed it I immediately freaked out, thinking there was surely something wrong if she was resorting to eating her own poo!

Nature: sometimes interesting, but always nauseating xD

LOLOLOL omg that just brought a memory back to me...we were staying at the lake...had Indian food at the neighbour's on the island...paddled our canoe there and back...miles from the nearest electrical or sewer service...and only a single-seater outhouse in the woods
