I don't know what a penny jar is but is it the same as a glass cookie jar? I use that and find it works well. I got it at Wal-Mart as well. I need to get more though.

I was looking for those at walmart! The one near me didn't have any xD I'm using a goldfish bowl tilted at an angle at the moment. Definitely gotta get a penny jar

A Penny Jarvis! Awesome autocorrect xD *iron man nerd*

But seriously, a penny jar is one of those candy jars you see in old fashioned candy shops. It's got the opening on the side, rather than the topz

Yes I believe it is the same as a cookie jar.
It is made so the opening is facing forward almost to the side.
When I purchased them at Walmart they call them penny jars.
I fill them with a mix of playsand (dried) and critter litter (for odor).
All five of them instantly took to them to play in and potty in.
I changed them out every few days

This is what I have:

http://www.walmart.com/msharbor/ip/16520333?&veh=mweb

I just bought some reptile sand yesterday cause it's cheaper than Chinchilla sand. Penny pees in hers. Wicket only has one at the moment and actually does use it to degrease himself it seems.

Anchor Hocking 1/2-Gal Penny Candy Jar: Kitchen & Dining : Walmart.com

Esmy this is the penny jar Walmart carries.

I did have only sand in the penny jar and a separate potty with critter litter in it, but they all would pee and poop in only the sand. So I took out the potty and only had sand in the penny jar, but it didn't help with the odor so now I just mix in a little bit of critter litter with the sand.

I got play sand at Home Depot a 5-lb bag for around $5. I use a baking pan and fill it once a week to dry the sand and that last all week for them.

So much cheaper than just critter litter alone for five hamsters.

Yeah the critter litter is really expensive! I am too lazy to bake sand so I wouldn't go that route. lol Glad it works for you though. Going on that idea, I could try mixing some bedding if needed, but Only one hamster has one so far and he doesn't pee/poo in it. The others would! He has a pee corner and poos in his house.
