Now I've never owned a LH hamster but I'm pretty sure from what I've read you shouldn't use wood shavings for this exact reasons. Someone else with LH hammies will chime in soon to tell you exactly what substrate is best but I would imagine they'd recommend a paper based one.

You may have to cut some of it depending how matted it is. Sometimes they will just get rid of bits themselves, but definitely change substrate. I never used shavings for my LHs for that reason. I don't know what country you are in but I used Aubiose for my LH hamsters and it never got stuck in their fur.

I also went out and bought some cheap baby toothbrushes as they have soft bristles to brush them with as I found it nicer than what are usually sold to brush small animals

I would cut, or if its a veery calm hamster i would try to carefuly sort it out with fingers or as SinNyx wrote, toothbrush, it depends on how tight it is. I use sawdust to some of mine LH and I sort it out every day so it doesnt get stuck. But on really good LH even toiletpaper get stuck, and other beddings.

I have long haired hammies but still use woodshaving. I just gently tease out any bits in their fur, which comes out very easily (and I'm sure mine enjoy it sometimes ) They very rarely get matted, but if one does appear I just cut it out.
