Thinking Of Getting a Friend For My Russian Dwarf ..

Hi, Everyone im David and I Recently Got My First Russian Dwarf Hamster, Ive had for about a week now. Im trying to get a buddy for my female hamster "Pinky" ... Is this a good idea or should i just stay with one hamster?..

Hey If she's been on her own for a while now it will probably very difficult to introduce another hamster. Chances will be quite high that they fall out. I might be wrong here, and please somebody who knows more correct me, but I think hybrids are very likely to fight even if they have never been on their own for a while and they are usually kept as single hamsters. You would have to get another cage with wheel and everything in case you have to separate them.

Where do you usually get your hamsters from? A pet shop or a breeder? I am asking because almost all my hamsters were sexed incorrectly by the pet shop and if that happens to you and you actually put a male hamster to your female you will and up with a lot of hamster babies!

May I ask why you are thinking about getting her a buddy?

All my hybrids were happy on their own. I personally wouldn't do it if I were you

I Got My Hamster at a PetSmart, she was with another female hamster when i got her. The reason i wanted to get her a buddy is because when i first saw them they were well behaved with eachother and thought it was cute so i figured it will be kinda nice for her to have a friend so she wouldnt be lonely. I want to get another female Im not trying to get a male and having them breed it would be troublesome. But, ive read on other post that they can become very territorial and end up fighting and i dont want that Theyre just too cute and adorable to have them fighting.

Thank You for taking some time and helping me out shes my first hamster since i was a kid, im trying to make her as happy healthy and comfortableas possible .

I'd agree that it is best to leave her on her own now. She will be much more people friendly too and quite happy. It is much harder to introduce another hamster to one that has already been established on its own in its own cage even for a week as she will see it as hers and the new hamster as an invader.
If you did decide to try it they would need careful introduction and close supervision and you would need to be sure you had an extra cage on hand to separate and keep them separate if they did fight. The cage you have now would also need to be a good size for two and have two wheels etc in it. Personally I would enjoy her own her own as she will be quite happy that way.

I didn't think you wanted to breed but it has happened before that you accidentally get the wrong sex.

I am sure she will be fine on her own. Just get her a lot of play time and things like that and she'll be a very happy hamster
