Default Hello! :D

Hey,
So i've been lurking on this forum for a while, reading up on various useful posts ...and looking at cute picture posts.
My forum name is often shortened to muddy (which is a fairly apt description i seem to attract mud!) as i love the outdoors, gardening, riding etc.
I'm a plant sciences masters student currently trying to write up my thesis *ugh* which is probably why i'm now finally introducing myself!...

I have 1 syrian hamster called Banoffee, who can be... a little simple at times... (who i will introduce in the syrian forum section). I have kept syrian hamsters in the past Albert (pronounced al-bear as in albert the fifth musketeer - that no-one remembers anymore). I had him when i was very small, he was the master of escape, we think he was actually made of toothpaste, as he could fit through the tiniest of gaps (i.e. between the bars) he could also bend these bars, with hindsight perhaps the cage wasn't so good! he was charmed, we found him once in the cupboard having made a nest of museli and carpet fluff, and he once chewed through the wire to the fridge (thankfully only though the earth wire or else he would have been hamster toast!) . Then when i was older there was fudge - she didn't live long but she was the loveliest hamster, she escaped once and got behind the skirting boards, i called her name and she came back to my voice. she could also do a few tricks.

Besides from banoffee my current pets are a collieX called Sam (well he's a family pet and lives with my parents, but i still consider him my dog) and some giant african land snails the margies freyr, freyja, loki and fenrir (and a number of their babies looking for homes) and several fulica types Nibbles, Nacht, Opal, Jet, Diamond, Tully, Stripes, Pink and Dash (and some of their babies looking for homes).

that's me really, slightly mad & plant obsessed

Ooooh. I'd love to have a snail as a pet!!!! I didn't know they could be pets! Now I must research! Maybe you could post some pictures of your snail in the "other pets" section???

Welcome though!

Hey!
thanks for all the welcomes!

Land snails are lovely pets (my mum disagrees.. i must be the only gardener who likes snails!). they have cute faces i think. they are no where near as slimey as people think! i think the garden snails are slimier than these guys.

You can have all sorts of snails as pets there many many sorts and sizes (from titchy tiny to MASSIVE) and from relatively easy to care for to very difficult. some are much rarer than others. i always like the megalobulimus oblongus because they have a tash! but they're rare, expensive and i believe more difficult to look after... one day maybe!

Anyway i've put some pics up my pets of the species Archachatina marginata subsp. suturalis (margie suts.) here: Introducing the giant african land snails - Margie suts (pic heavy)

i recommend this forum if you're interested in giant land snails as pets: PetSnails Forum - Home
and their home page: Keeping Pet Snails and Slugs - Care, species, health and much more...

I have to add, land snails are not allowed as pets here in the US due to the laws about invasive species, so I am jealous.
