Hello from another Newbie and Happy New Year
Hello all
I am Catja and I live in Herefordshire. My household consists of hubby who is a big softy, my two cats, two hamsters and currently one vole.
I owned a hamster called Ginger when I was 10 but for the last 20 years was really a cat person, then through a strange set of cicumstances last year we became a bit of a vole rescue centre and this triggered a renewed interest in Rodents.
Well 10 months on and I have a silver grey female hamster and a newly acquired golden hamster called Algy. Both were pet shop buys I'm afraid and taming has been interesting. Algy is very new and we are still introducing him, he will walk from hand to hand for a few minutes and has finally stopped biting! (I hope)
My next hamster I am definitely going to get from a breeder as I would love to know what colour it is and its history. The pet shop couldn't even say what sex my hamsters were. (Pretty sure I have a boy and a girl)though my girl was sold to me as a boy!
Happy New Year to all of you

Hello and welcome. Good to have you with us and looking forward to hearing all about your animals. Glad to hear Algy is starting to trust you. He will come on well now and I am sure be a great character soon. Pet shops really are hopeless on the whole as the number of pregnant females from pet shops shows us. Voles in your area are lucky. Do you release them back to the wild when they are fit?

Thanks for the welcome
Hi, thanks for the welcome, yes we try and release them back where possible, we live in the middle of the countryside on the edge of a wood. Nelson or possibly Nelsonia as we now think was one of those that wormed their way in and never left!
When I have worked out how to post pics I would like some help on identifying the colour of Kretschmer my female (I think) hamster

Hello and welcome from me!
Hope you enjoy yourself on HC, its quite quiet at the moment, but will soon pick up after the holiday I am sure. We'd love to see pictures of your hams (and cats and voles!) and to hear all about them.

Hi the article was really useful, she is I think a silver grey. I also think she maybe a long haired female. I assumed when I got her she must be some kind of semi long hair, not realising female long haired hamsters don't have long hair. She is a fluffy hammy, and can look quite disreputable when she first gets up, very dishevelled until she has a good groom. She also has two little tufts on her back end that we have always thought hilarious

Aww she is adorable and you managed the pic. Great! I think you may be right A silver grey and definitly a long hair. We think the females have little mini skirts! They usually have tufts on the hips and behind the ears too.
