Default Possible hybrid

Hi ive not posted for a long time and usually only have roborvoski hamsters. However I picked up one the other day described as a roborvoski but I'm pretty sure he's a hybrid. I cant work out how ti post a picture or would put one on but he's white with a grey stripe down his back iusually with roborvoski hamsters you cant see a,tail this hamster you can. I ve never had a hybrid before so any help would be advised. I think they can become dia etic so cant have fruit is that correct. Plus shoukd they be handled?I was told roborvoski hamsters were look but don't touch by someone in a hamster club so have stuck to that. Also I have him in a store with no lid do I need one is he likely to get out when a bit older? Thanks

Roborovskis don’t have dorsal stripes so i would suspect that you probably have a Hybrid of some sort.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing as Hybrids can make lovely pets but you are correct that they are prone to diabetes. Unfortunately no amount of dietary adjustments will prevent the condition from occurring in a hamster that is genetically predisposed to get it and it’s just a case of managing the condition of it does develop.

I personally don’t like feeding much fruit to my Chinese (they’re also prone to diabetes), preferring to give them vegetables instead but the odd bit of fruit once in a while shouldn’t cause too many problems once in a while unless they are already diabetic.

It does sound as though you have a hybrid, there’s a thread here that shows how to post photos, if you can do that we can be more certain of what you have.
How To Embed Photos

They are prone to diabetes so do avoid fruit or any other sweet treats with honey or other sugars.
They can definitely be handled, once settled in & used to you they usually really enjoy out of cage time.

Hi here is,a photo of Winter. Hopefully its not too large. I'm presuming hes,a,hybrid from what you said about the stripe. (He was advertised as a roborvoski ) I am aiming at keeping him on fresh and dried veg to make sure he's ok
He is very tame and will happily sit on your hand and can be picked up. I'm thinking of getting him something to have playtime in. Would this be a good idea and what would be good ti go in it? Thanks

Yes, he looks like a hybrid to me and the name really suits him. I have three hybrids myself and they all have very different personalities.
Aside from fresh veg you'll need to feed him a good dwarf hamster mix available from Rodipet, Getzoo, Zooplus or ratrations for example. You probably fed your Robos a similar mix anyway.
I'd say that in general Hybrids are easier to handle than Robos because they're not as fast but aside from that there isn't much of a difference regarding care.
Best to avoid fruit because of the sugar and sugar or honey based snacks but apart from that they eat the same as other hamster species. They love dried mealworms for treats.

Looking forward to see more of Winter. He looks lovely and seems to have a temperament to match.

Thankyou.luckily I have some dwarf hamster hybrid food I ordered from rodipet by mistake (it was supposed to be roborvoski ) whi,h I am feeding him. Apparently you can't order from rodipet until mid January due ti brexitand the coronavirus so im glad I have it. He does love mealworms (although I'm not sure he's,just storing them as they disappear in him mouth very quickly !) At the moment he's in a detolf with no lid as my robos didn't need one. Should I get one for him as I can go to ikea this week and get some photo frames,to make one.im not sure how good they are at climbing. Thanks

I would definitely make a meshed lid because they can be very good at climbing. Again, it depends on the hamster's personality. I have a dwarf who doesn't want to climb or get out of his enclosure at all and another who is a right little acrobatic monkey who climbs and monkey bars across her cage at speed doing one paw turns.

Thankyou looks like I'll be heading to ikea this week then. I definitely don't want him getting out and I would rather be safe then sorry. Can they eat cuttlefish i gave my robos whimzees for their teeth but I suspect there is too much sugar in that so would cuttlefish be ok? If it is will I need to take it out or is it ok to stay in there?

Whimzees don't have sugar in. They taste sweet due to the glycerin but that doesn't affect blood sugar levels so should be fine for a hybrid. Off-brand whimzees often have sweet potato and carrot in though.

I wouldn't give cuttlefish as they make ingest too much calcium from it.

I hadnt realised that. I've removed the cuttlefish and given him a whimzee which disappeared overnight! I can only presume he stored it somewhere but ill no doubt find out when he's cleaned out! I've had part of a lid(i bought the wrong size photo frames so it covers just over 1/2. It does cover the are he can climb on which is where the various houses are. He is aware of me coming in the room which surprised me as he turns towards me and starts on 2 legs! At tge moment I've just let him out on my lap(he got faster the longer he was out!) Should I set up a playpen and what sort of things should I have in it? Thanks
