If you’re used to Syrian hams I can imagine how you might feel a bit nervous handling a Russian but I’m sure you’ll be fine & she’s going to love having a run around & climb on you outside the cage.
She looks really cute there, good to hear how well she’s doing.

Bramble went in the playpen (a popup ball pit) last night and seemed to enjoy it for a few minutes and then became really frantic so I put her back. I might have to build up her playpen time gradually.

I'm having a slight problem with her biting. I think it started when I started hand feeding her. I don't think it's aggressive or territorial as she doesn't run up to me to bite, she doesn't seem upset or afraid and she still bites even outside the cage. It's a hard nip, not enough to break the skin but enough to hurt. I'm going to try the scented tissue trick first and see if that helps.

It’s probably best to keep out of cage time short to begin with, she’ll soon get used to it though I would think, what did you put in the playpen? It helps to have something that’s familiar from the cage or scatter a bit of substrate from the cage in there so it has her scent on it.
They can be a bit nippy when young, it’s usually just their way of exploring things but most tend to just grow out of it.

The playpen had various hides and other things in it, and a wheel but nothing from her cage. I'll make to do that next time.

How should I react when she bites?

I just gently move my hand away for a moment if they bite, it can take a bit of perseverance but I think the less you react (not always easy I know!) the sooner they stop doing it.

Bramble has been in the playpen again, this time with some substrate and things from her cage and she was a lot happier but I still kept it short. The biting is also gradually improving.

She doesn't get up properly until midnight but she comes out regularly during the day and will come to the cage door if she sees me. Here she was this morning having been given some millet:

That's a lovely photo of Bramble! You are lucky though, to be able to interact with her during the day.

Thank you and I do feel very lucky. Bramble is the perfect introduction to Russian dwarfs (and would have been a great first hamster for me, I found Pumpkin very difficult).

Bramble does look lovely there & very happy with her millet
It’s nice to hear how well she’s settled in with you too.
I’ve found most of my Russian hams have been happier to interact in the mornings or during the day often preferring to have time to themselves in the evenings.

Bramble this evening:

The biting has basically stopped (just the occasional nibble still). She went in the playpen another couple of times and she doesn't hate it but she also doesn't really seem to enjoy it. I let her run around on my bed instead which she loves.

I haven't worked out where her toilet is yet (the sand and the wheel are both clean) and there's a smell coming from the cage so I will have to inspect her house soon. The roof lifts off so hopefully she won't be too disturbed by it.
