Nice cage set up. Mabel has got plenty to keep her occupied in there! Like your homemade cardboard parcel. I've had a go at making some toys for my Bramwell.

Thank you all for the feedback I've added more substrate now - I didn't want to put too much in at first in case she had a bad reaction to it, but thankfully she seems fine.

She keeps changing sleeping locations for same reason, last night I caught her burrowed down under her wheel!
I got these pictures of her before, not sure why she was awake so early but she was having the time of her life rolling round in her sand.
You can see she's pretending to be shy

I would try to add a good house to her cage & maybe put more substrate in if you can.
The white thing isn't really much use as a house but a cardboard box with no base & a small door cut in would do fine, big enough to build a nice nest with lots of shredded toilet tissue.
Thank you I do have a cardboard box for her but I didn't know what type of bed she'd like most so I left it out, will definitely put it in when I spot clean later! As for the tissue, there is some in her cage but she doesn't use it. She didn't have any in her cage at the pet shop so I think she just doesn't know what she's supposed to do with it. I usually leave it in the middle of the cage so they can choose where they want to move it to build their nest, but she didn't show any interest in it.. I tried putting it in the house for her but she ended up stuffing it all into her cardboard tube, which is weird since she doesn't sleep in there. I know some people use hay in for the hamsters to nest with so I might try that. She has been burrowing down into the substrate though, so hopefully she's warm enough for now.

Thank you! She really likes the heart dish I was originally using it as a sand bath but the sides are so shallow that she just kept kicking the sand out !

Lovely photos of her, she's such a sweetie!

I would just leave the tissue for now & let her do what she wants when she wants.
I've only had one female Russian, unlike my boys who usually just slept in the same place she would always have about five nests at any one time! As long as she's got plenty of substrate & options for houses or places to nest she'll be fine.
I haven't found mine use hay for nests if I put it in the cage & you do have to be careful, freeze it for about a week or a minimum of 48hrs then pick out any sharp bits that might damage pouches or poke her in the eye or something.

Aww, congrats on getting Mabel! I'm so happy that you now have her to love and cherish. Even though it is perfectly understandable and I know how you feel, please try not to feel guilty giving a new, fortunate ham a wonderful, loving home with you after losing Bambi. Our hearts have a way of growing even larger with each ham we bring into our lives and there is plenty of room for another ham to be in your heart while still keeping your beloved Bambi in there, too. I'm also sure that Bambi will be happily looking down from the bridge at the two of you and will be pleased that Mabel will be as lucky to have a ham-parent as wonderful as you.

I absolutely love Mabel's adorable, big ears and her sweet, pretty face. She is a real charmer, and I adore how she pretends to be shy peeking her face out from behind different hiding places in her lovely palace. She is a real cutie and quite the silly ham. I'm so glad that the two of you are forming such a lovely and sweet bond with one another, and I look forward to hearing more about your darling fluffball and seeing more pics of her cuteness.

Hiya everyone, how are you all? I haven't had such a good month. We had a cat that used to come to our house everyday, he only had three legs and he was such a cutie! He'd been visiting us for daily about five years but he wasn't actually our cat - he lived down the road from our house so he wasn't a stray or anything he just liked to come and hang out with us. We liked to call him Three Legs (For obvious reasons) but we eventually found out from his owners that his name was Bobby!

Some time in the last 2 -3 weeks, I can't remember exactly when - it's all a blur, he showed up like he usually does but he had an injured front paw. It was on the same side that his leg was missing from and because it was hurting a swollen he could barely walk on it at all. So we went to tell his owners and unfortunately she couldn't afford to take him to the vets. Now usually we have money saved up for if one of our animals ever gets sick but our cat Pebbles had been to the vets just a few days earlier (Thankfully she's alright) So we couldn't even help her out with that She decided that the only real option she had was to hand him over to the RSPCA. Even though he wasn't my cat I miss him so much - I can't imagine how his owner feels. I'm so glad that he's getting help though, I'm sure he'll have no problem being re-homed he's so sweet.

Mabel is doing good, the last week or so I've noticed she's gotten a little fat so she's not officially on a diet - no more sun flower seeds for her! ..At least for now. I let her run around on my bed for a bit the other night as George decided that her playpen would be a great place to take a nap. Thanks, George. So poor Mabel was temporarily playpenless. I got some cute pictures for you! She's gotten a grey stripe on her back now.
