Smile Artemis' thread

Hi everyone!

From the title, I'm sure you can guess I adopted a new hamster! I've named her Artemis, after the Ancient Greek goddess and she is a Russian Hybrid from Pets At Home. She is estimated to be around six months old and has been living in the Support Adoption for Pets area for the last five months. I'm not 100% sure why she was there but I suspect she was part of a pair that didn't work out and she was brought back as it says she had treatment for injuries in her file. She does have a small amount of ear missing as if she'd been fighting and it looks like she has a scar just below her nose (it looks completely healed though).

I've had her for just over a week now and she seems to have settled in very quickly. She's incredibly tame, friendly and energetic. When I put her in her new cage (Savic Plaza) for the first time she was so excited and spent ages just running around and exploring. She was delighted when she found the sand bath and spent ages digging, rolling and sleeping in there. I've put her wheel in there too, and like Jasper, she likes to sit under there to depouch (is that a word?) her cheeks and wash. Artemis seems quite happy to just let me sit and watch her. I've got another snuggle pouch (Jasper had one too) and I put a few sunflower seeds in there and she just climbs in so I can take her out of the cage to have a run around. She's so entertaining to watch climb! I think she's an excellent climber. I would attach a photo but I've forgotten how .

I do have a couple of concerns (not major) but I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good shelves (preferably not corner ones as I can't attach them to the Plaza) that aren't too expensive as she can climb up the bars and it is quite high (Jasper never climbed his bars). Alternatively, can anyone recommend some hammocks and hanging toys that work well for dwarf hamsters. She doesn't seem to chew fabric if that helps? Thank you

Congrats on the new ham Chesca! She sounds adorable! I typically make my own shelves when I need some. I use untreated, kiln-dried pine or poplar.

Here are the steps I follow when making my shelves: Shelf/Ledge Instructions

Good luck with little Artemis, looking forward to learning all about her

Congrats Chesca, so pleased to hear you have a new ham now.
Artemis sounds adorable & quite a character, look forward to hearing more about her.
Ranch house cages on ebay do some good shelves of various sizes, I find using small ledges like lava ledges, the small wooden ledges you can get from ratrations (scroll down a bit to see them) or something similar to make almost like a series of steps around the cage seems to work well, it distracts them from just climbing up the bars if they can go from one ledge to another up & down.

The thread showing how to upload/embed photos is here.

I'm glad to hear that you've welcomed a new hamster and I look forward to hearing about her.

If you're looking for fabric hammocks and shelves then these are my favourite suppliers:

Fuzzbutt Cage Comforts: Fuzzbutt Cage Comforts - Fabulous Furniture for your Fuzzies!
The Homer rage is the perfect size for a hamster.
Dainty Paws: https://www.daintypaws.co.uk/
She'll take custom orders from time to time where you can choose your fabric out of the many she has available and the fleece to go with it.
Cosy beds and Burrows: https://www.cosybedsandburrows.com/c...k-hangers.html
Although they sell more in the way of guinea pig toys, I buy their little fabric shelves to go in my bin cages. The small is perfect for a dwarf hamster and my girls in particular love to sit on their 'chatting' through the mesh.

Congratulations chesca on your new ham. Artemis sounds very cute indeed.
I was going to recommend ranch house ledges and fuzzbutt homer range too.
Look forward to hearing more.

Artemis sounds love!y! Rather similar to my Popcorn who was also in the adoption section of pets at home. He is lively and confident too.

Lucky girl living in the plazza. Pops is in the hamster heaven which seems good. I would like a shelf or two. Cypher recently suggested that giving him a large house would be a good shelf substitute so will be getting a lief cabin (zooplus) or sin rabbit house (amazon).

Thank you all for the recommendations and replies! I'll go through all of the links in the morning and save my pocket money up for my favourite things. I won't see Artemis until tomorrow (technically today) evening so I'll update her thread then, hopefully with photos too .

Smile Re: Artemis' thread

I feel bad I never really posted much about Artemis, so I’m finally going to update her thread. She’s now around 2 years and 8/9 months so she’s now very old. She still comes out her nest quite a lot and I see her almost every day that I’m at my dads. However she does look pretty frail these days - she’s lost a lot of weight and looks quite thin. I’ve been supplementing her with a bit of baby food and porridge but she doesn’t seem nearly as interested in her seed mix as she used to be. Also I swear there was a really in-depth thread about different baby foods that were safe and I can’t seem to find it anywhere - anyone know what happened to it or can send me a link?

I went a bit crazy in Boots and bought 4 different Ellas Kitchen baby foods but i wanted to double check here that they’re safe. I got the carrots and peas ones, which I know are fine. I know carrots are high in sugar and she’s a hybrid, but she’s so old I’d rather she had a good quality of life with a bit of variety. Then there’s the other two baby food which I’m not so sure about (the selection near my dads house it atrocious for rodents compared to my mums). There’s a macaroni cheese and basil baby food which I’m pretty sure it’s fine, I’m just not sure about the basil so I wanted to double check and the banana baby brekkie which I’m sure I’ve heard people say they use on the forum before, I just can’t remember. So if someone could double check them for me, that would be appreciated. I’m gonna see if I can get some better ones when I’m back at my mums, so if there’s any small pouches of baby food that you can recommend for Artie, again I’d appreciate it.

She’s not as interested at coming out of her cage anymore, so I kinda just get her out for a quick pet and check over. I still hear her drinking from her bottle and she still runs on her wheel, albeit much slower these days and not for very long. She also seems to trip over her bedding quite a lot .

She’s my little spoiled princess and I hate to see her getting old, although she’s lived a very long life and to be honest, has made it longer than I thought she would. I love her so much and I’m so grateful to have got to spend so much extra time with her in lockdown.

I don’t think I have anything else to add, except I kinda miss being on here and that I wanna make more time for it, even if it’s just to update my own threads. I guess without further ado I’ll finally post pictures of my spoiled brat (it’s only taken 2 years). The most recent good picture I have of her drinking from her bottle a couple weeks ago, but I’m gonna see if I can find my oldest pic of her.

She does look old bless her but really doesn’t look to be in bad condition for her age, she’s still a beauty! They do get frail & thin & often go off seed mixes or harder foods so that’s quite normal for her age.
Both the baby foods you mentioned are fine, basil shouldn’t be a problem it’s only a tiny bit anyway, it may just be a question of whether she’ll like the taste or not.
The favourite ellas kitchen pouches with mine are cauliflower cheese with butterbeans & pumpkin, broccoli & sweetcorn, I haven’t had one ham not like those.
I don’t know if this is the thread you were thinking of, it’s the only one I remember.
Feeding Hamsters with Missing Teeth or Who Are Elderly
It is hard watching them get old but you’re doing everything you can for her & she sounds content.

Thank you Cypher . I ended up getting the cauliflower cheese baby food as well and she does seem to be enjoying the macaroni cheese one. That’s not the thread I’m thinking of, but thank you I did have a read through it anyway.

I got some of the Applaws cat food pouches as well so she can have something with a bit more protein. I got a chicken and rice one, and then another one with chicken and pumpkin. I haven’t seen her eat it yet but I just put it out.

I’ve also attached a photo of her eating some of her baby food from just now. She seems to be doing okay, but she is definitely a lot thinner and less active. Are there any pellets I can get to soften for her? I could take some HH bits out but they don’t exactly look appealing.

Anyway I’ll give a proper update tomorrow when I’ve spent a bit more time with her.
