Re: Meet Willow
Haven't had one of those, CMB. I've never seen them in p@h, though I have looked for hamster sized beds in store. I have a donut bed for Quigley but to be honest he mostly ignores it! I really like the pretty purple colour of that bed, though.

Re: Meet Willow
Are you thinking about the fabric bed or donut bed for out of cage time CMB? I haven't had either but I wouldn't put anything like that in the cage, a couple of my Russians have been ok with fleece but generally I'd be worried about chewing & possibly getting peed on!

Re: Meet Willow
I also wouldn’t put the bed in the cage. Quigley’ donut bed is strictly for play pen time.

Re: Meet Willow
I do tend to think those beds are made to appeal to humans more than hamsters tbh.
You might be better off with something like the cosy pocket from P@H which some of them seem to like or the mini snooze cube which is more of a hideaway than a bed but Tinwë has one & Flynt used to & they really like them.
With either you need to be really sure they won't get chewed though if you want them in the cage.

Re: Meet Willow
The choices get bigger. The bed would be used out of her tank. A snooze cube or snuggle pouch could be a good idea.
I'm quite confident that it won't be chewed, as Willow has not chewed various chew toys. She does chew a whimzee though.

Re: Meet Willow
They will still sometimes chew fabric even when they don't tend to chew other things, maybe it just has more chew appeal or they think it might make good nesting material if they chew it up so always best to observe them with any fabric item for quite a while before leaving them alone with it.

Re: Meet Willow
I will supervise any new bed in case of chewing.

Re: Meet Willow
I find it funny that some things that get ignored in the cage, get used out of the cage The little hay house was one of those things with Charlie - it was totally ignored in the cage, other than to use it as a step, but out of the cage he would spend ages inside it ripping it to bits.
I think because the donut bed is round it seems nice to curl up inside. In my case it only really gets used for that if a) the hamster is a bit dopey at certain times of the evening and b) if it is slightly under something so has a bit of a "roof" - eg partly under a cushion.
So basically then it becomes a comfy hidey place. I have the small snooze cube as well and Newt goes in that quite a lot - it's also something I can hold in front of him inside the cage and he walks into and can then lift him out in it (with hands over the holes!) He doesn't go to sleep in it, like he does in the donut bed, but it's a comfy hidey place on the sofa or in the playpen if he's not in the mood for running around. The two entrance holes are good and they seem to like peeking out of both (or sneaking out the back to avoid you).
I've only had Syrians though but I'm sure dwarf hammies get dopey sometimes
The square PAH bed may or may not get interest - if it isn't fleece it might not be tempting enough - they do seem to like nice soft fleecy things.

Re: Meet Willow
Yes CMB I got that little chair/cushion thing for Boris, he has a green one as I wasn't sure he'd appreciate a purple one
I thought he could use it for sitting watching the tv with us (I'm joking, well I secretly hoped he would sit in it and watch the tv with us ) but he's far too busy for that. He will sit in it if he's got something to eat though, but then that's about the only time he does sit still He hasn't chewed it, it is a funny sort of material though, feels quite strong but I wouldn't trust him with it in his cage.

Re: Meet Willow
Oh yes, the sitting still thing is hard for Willow, so unless the bed is comfy she is likely to just climb on and off again.
I had been a bit concerned lately, as when spot cleaning. I wasn't finding peed on sand, but the mystery has been solved. Willow has decided the sand bath is just for bathing and a mini food store, so she has been peeing next to her flower pot. It is against the side of her tank, but has a small amount of Fitch there to stop it rolling/moving. I have removed the flower pot and added another jar (like her sand bath jar) and put some Fitch in there.
Just have to wait and see what she thinks of it now.
As she enjoyed the walnut the other day. I got a pack of de-shelled walnuts earlier.
Just in case she didn't like the removal of the flower pot she has a few treats hidden about ready for when she wakes up.
Latest weight is approximately 60g.
