Re: Meet Max
Max is so cute. His eyes are a lovely dark shade of red. They look very pretty next to his light fur.
As for the veg, could you just give him a really tiny piece so that he doesn't have enough left over to store? Or maybe feed it to him only when he comes out, so you can stop him taking any away with him? I know you say that he is a late riser, so I get that that might be problematic.
If he gets up late, does he go to bed later in the morning? Maybe you could interact with him more then? Mushu is generally awake when I get up at around 5-7am.

Re: Meet Max
Thanks AP I don't know if I'd be best to do that or a huge bit he wouldn't manage to carry away lol.
He's never up when we get up and we are up early too.
Are you only seeing 2 pics by the way AP? I posted 5 but only 2 are showing for me (even though 5 were showing!!) and I'm struggling to get in to photobucket to see what is happening grrrrr.

Re: Meet Max
I can't see the photos so I'll come back later when photobucket is behaving!
I would just give him the veg, none of mine have been prone to hiding it (except Whisper who always had to put her pepper in her hammock!) there's two thoughts really, if you give just tiny piece then if they go missing they'll more likely just dry out & not go mouldy but I tend to prefer to give bigger bits as they never seem to eat more than they need & if they do drag them off somewhere the leftovers are easy to spot!
Zylvan's much the same, up late & back to bed early although I do see him briefly I always just leave his veg out for him to eat in the night. I leave it in the cage over night with all of them actually.

Re: Meet Max
I am only seeing two (very cute!) pictures, BP. I sympathise with the photobucket issues - I swear it is down more often than it is working.
Sounds like Max likes his sleep - he must only be up for a few hours! Maybe hybrid hams sleep more than Syrians or something.
I dunno about the big piece of veg. All the hams I have ever had would tear big pieces into pouch sized portions and have the lot transported to their nests within seconds! They have all been Syrians, though. I'm sure giving a normal amount won't be a problem as most hamsters tend to eat fresh food very quickly. I usually just check for and remove any leftovers 24 hours later, regardless of how much I have fed.

Re: Meet Max
I can see all the photos now, he may not of been a happy man but he still manages to look very cute! Love the first one
April I always thought it was the other way round with hybrids generally being more active than syrians especially during the day but they are all individuals in the end!
I think carrying veg off to the house/nest seems to be a bit more of a syrian trait too, not that I've ever had a syrian but many people seem to mention that here but it's not something I've had happen with my hybrids or chineseys.

Re: Meet Max
I see them all now! Oh he is a gorgeous boy - love those little white ears!
I've never owned a hybrid, so don't know much about their sleeping patterns. However, I think you might be right as I remember reading somewhere that Campbells are more crepuscular than nocturnal (I think it was Campbells anyway) and maybe that applies to hybrids too... But, as you say, all hamsters are different! My brother had a syrian who never ever slept. He'd be up all day and all night - it was so weird. Perhaps you even get insomniac hamsters

Re: Meet Max
All my hamsters get a piece of veg regularly. The bedroom hamsters are not usually up til late so i jist leave a small bit in their cage which has always gone by the morning. Fairy my roborovski loves carrot and broccli but not so keen on corriander.
Max is sooooo gorgeous!

Re: Meet Max
He's so adorable and I love his colouring. Such a cutie.
Harvey gets veggies everyday and if he doesn't get them he'll throw a hamtrum, fortunately I've only forgotten his veg a couple of times.
With Max give him a couple of small bits, vary it.

Re: Meet Max
Thanks AP, ff, Cypher and Lizzy
I think I'll just try putting a bit in a leaving it overnight. The other 4 haven't ever taken it away to hide it so hopefully he won't either but I think I'll use a bigger bit just in case so I can find it quick.

I find that all of mine are very different when it comes to what times they are awake. Pasha is out and about frequently during the day, Boris is up for hours at a time during the day then goes to bed for hours and hours. Artie is always up banging his bowl for breakfast and is out usually a couple of times for another look in the bowl/a drink or a forage around and then he's standing in his wheel looking for his scatter feed at night time. Max and Jaska are the nocturnal hamsters

Re: Meet Max
Lovely to see Max again - I've recently been wondering how he is - he is so handsome. It must be difficult trying to clean his cage when he having a hamtrum - but I'm sure he appreciates the clean cage though.
I would also give him veg even though he not awake.
