Smile Introducing Victor

So I figured I should finally introduce my little baby. I did talk about him for a little in the introduction page, but I wanted to tell his little story. It's not much of a story, but he is a cutie, so... here goes... (I think he's a hybrid, that's what a few people have told me. lol so here I am.)
Well a PetSmart recently opened in my little area and though I wouldn't normally buy actual animals from a PetSmart as there is one other place a little better in my small area, I fell completely in love with this little hamster. My mother and I visited the PetSmart several times back in late November/early December always with the intent of buying things for Christmas for our pets. Obviously you can't help but to go look at the actual animals when in a pet store. I mean, who would pass up a chance to look at cute animals? Well, there he was. He was actually awake and cleaning himself. I knew I had to get him. I knew I would end up getting this hamster because damn he was cute. I had had a hamster before, but I couldn't afford one at the moment because lol... well I would have to buy a new cage and all this good stuff. So I decided I would probably end up buying one after the holidays.
Meanwhile, I was constantly worried that he would be adopted! The fear clenched my heart like there was no tomorrow. Well, every time we went he was there. Obviously I'm not 100% certain that this hamster was the same as the one before, but I was about 90% sure as no one in my area really likes or adopts small critters like a hamster. So finally my friend and I go to the store to actually buy Christmas presents for our animals and I pick out a nice cat scratcher for my precious Grimmathy. I was talking to my friend about the hamster and her being the type of person who will always tell you to buy that thing, she told me to buy the hamster. So after much excitement and running around the store and picking out a hamster cage, I finally go to an employee and they bless me with this sweet heart.
Needless to say, I named the precious bab Victor (I named him after Yuri on Ice because I'm a loser).
He has been such a good boy since I've gotten him. It only took a few days before he was willing to climb into my hands and all over my arms. He has SO much energy when he's up. He is extremely curious and has such a great personality.
I know someone might say something about this, but I do let him around my cat. And they do share a room. I mean, the cat stays on the floor and usually sleeps with me. And Victor stays on a high dresser that Grimm can't get to (he's also about 30 pounds, so he couldn't make it if he wanted to). When I take Victor out of the cage, I usually play with him on my bed and normally my cat is sitting there. I don't worry about them though. My cat is EXTREMELY mellow. He couldn't care less about the hamster and usually just turns around. Obviously I would never leave them alone together because that would be stupid. But Victor doesn't care about the cat either. I mean I've had him since early December and he just runs where ever he pleases when he's on my bed. He will run up to the cat and climb the cat's back and sniff the cat's face. And Grimm won't do anything about it.
The two of them are such sweethearts. It helps that the cat is old and lazy. I couldn't put him on a diet if I wanted to. He doesn't even play with toys. He never has.
But any ways. This is turning into an extremely long post...
Any ways... Victor is such a sweetheart. I'm going to another pet store (not PetSmart) to see if I can find a few really nice hamster toys and a new wheel as he quickly outgrew the one that came with the cage lol. I'm so excited.
His only downside is that he is EXTREMELY picky. I only really have a blend I bought at the pet store for food... and he absolutely refuses to eat the pellets. He will only eat the seeds and corn and I'm not too sure what to do about that... but I'm sure I'll figure something out.
But any ways! That's it! Here are a few pictures of him being precious and way too fast to actually take pictures of...

He is a very handsome little man, I do love his colouring

I spoke about the cat issue in your other thread so I won't repeat myself here!

It isn't unusual for hams not to like pellets. What mix are you feeding him?
Russians do tend to like smaller seeds rather than pellets or big biscuit bits that some foods have, I think it's a bit expensive to get but I do know you can get hold of Burgess dwarf hamster harvest in the US which is a good sugar free dwarf mix although it still has grass pellets which virtually no ham will eat!
I can't remember all the US mixes but it is important to find one with no added sugars (many have molasses) or fruit in them due to the potential for diabetes.

I think the best option would be just feeding Burgess and occasionally adding different seeds and other healthy extras. It's just not possible to find a US mix that has the right nutrition and has no added sugar. The best you'd get is by Higgins but that is far too low in protein for any hamster. You couldn't boost the protein without mixing lab blocks or similar foods, and since those all have some form of added sugar they're not good for diabetes prone species.

If you did an order for Burgess through Viovet you could also get loads of nice toys and treats, including tons of natural forage mixes in order to take advantage of any delivery and get as much as you can

He's so blooming pretty and I love his colouring!
Like cypher, I mentioned also about your cat in your other thread.
All it takes is for you to take your eyes of Victor and your cat could strike, all cats are hunters and just because Victor's your pet doesn't mean he's safe.
I wouldn't recommend your cat sleeping in the same room.

What an adorable little guy, and a very interesting adoption story too! I don't know much about dwarf hamsters, but second amityville's suggestion on burgess for your little one. Enjoy your little fluff!

Hmm. I will definitely look into Burgess for Victor I was also thinking of getting some mealworms for him at another pet store near me, but I don't really want to buy a huge bag on the off chance he doesn't like them. But I will definitely look into Burgess when I get a chance.
As for sleeping in the same room, I put Victor's cage in the only spot I know is 100% safe from the cat AND the dog. I worry more about the dog than he cat. The dog always manages to get in places she shouldn't be and she will yap at the cage and bite at the cage and all that junk (but she's a Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix so she's a tad annoying)... The cat won't jump onto extremely high places because of his arthritis. And I'm not about to kick him out of the room at night because that's where he sleeps and he will howl all night if he doesn't have company. During the day when Victor is actually asleep, however, he doesn't hang out in the room.

Victor's so cute!! He looks just like my hybrid Marcello only with more white patches!

I feed my hybrids on Burgess and I give them some extra sunflower seeds, oats, mealworms and chicken as treats, as well as occasional fresh veggies.

What cage is he in? I don't think I recognise it from the pictures.

He's in this cage.
Since I wasn't going to get a hamster until after the holidays when I had more money, I was going to get a better one. However, since the fear and my friend convinced me to get one sooner, I ended up with this cage since it came with so much compared to the other cages in the store (not that they had a large selection either). I've been slowly adding in more things and upgrading other things since (like the wheel). It's a decent cage though. And the Pet Smart I went to put a little pink car in it which I use to store Victor's Apple and pear branches.

It's honestly not hamster appropriate Leveled cages aren't good for hamsters to begin with as they're not climbing animals like rats and would need a flat floor space rather than levels.Plus,it's an extremely small cage to begin with

Keep it and use it for a travel cage, but definitely get an easier access more hamster appropriate enclosure as soon as possible. It isn't the worst value but considering the price and that the items included could be purchased separately cheap and a much better size bin cage made instead for a better value you did get ripped off.

For future reference,8.5 inch Comfort Wheels would be fine for dwarf hamsters and only cost $10 at Petsmart.Similar wood chews are less than $3,bowls can be bought from thrift stores or Walmart for $2 or less for something that will last virtually forever if you don't drop it,and comparable or higher quality substrate which will last longer in a bigger cage with deeper substrate is very cheap at $20 for a very big bale/pack of Kaytee Clean and Cozy at Petco Double that substrate of off brand Carefresh would only be a $3 or so value at Walmart etc.The cage itself isn't the best for travel either, and a $5 or less plastic critter keeper would do just as well for short trips. The food included is useless junk to be honest, which might sound overly critical but when something is loaded with chemicals and dyes and sugar it just isn't good especially for diabetes prone animals!
