Default Hybrid?

I posted in the Campbell thread as I'm not wholly sure what my hammy is
I had presumed hybrid and folks in that forum said hybrid

Do we all think hybrid?
Either way she's beautiful
She's called Margot and 5 months old adopted from pets at home two days ago, no real background

Congratulations on your new hammie, she's gorgeous! It's almost impossible to get a pure campbell or winter white from a pet shop now so unless she came from a breeder she's a hybrid. She looks like a hybrid too

Thank you her markings are so gorgeous I love them
She's an odd colour
Here she looks brown
But in life she looks more dark grey and brownish parts

But yes very hard to get purebreds from a pet shop
I'm just going to treat her as a hybrid as suggested in my original post

I think I posted in another thread but my Chloe looks similar to Margot. I always refer to her as a Winter White hybrid. She looks more Winter White yet not pure. With my past Campbells, I referred to them as Russian Campbells, or just Russian dwarves (hybrids). The Winter whites have a brown triangle or some sort of shape on top of their heads. Forgot the exact name of the shape. I believe WW are at one end of the scale & Russians at the other end, yet all hybrids. That's just how I look at it

Yes my hammy has a triangle head I noticed! Took a photo of her facing me and it's small as it goes towards the top like a triangle xx

Hybrids can appear more like Winter Whites than Campbells or vice versa, it really depends what makes up their ancestry so Margot's parents, grandparents and great grandparents could all have been Campbells for example but because there's likely to have been a Winter White somewhere in her ancestry, that is what makes her a Hybrid. Most pet shop Russians will be Hybrids regardless of what the shop labels them as.

My sister's Hybrid, who passed away recently seemed more Campbells but she changed colour from black and grey to being almost white in her first winter with us. She never changed back to her original colours fully but Hybrids can surprise you sometimes with what you actually get. Sooty was quite a healthy girl despite the risks associated with Hybrids and she was two and a half when she died. I hope that you are able to enjoy the same long life with Margot as we did with Sooty.

It is very interesting, but as some breeders would know there's a huge issue of the way an animal appears vs its actual genetics.A good example of this is with dogs, and the way that mixed breed dogs may look like a certain breed but are completely different in reality.

There are a couple genes that Russians can have that resemble Winter White such as the silvering gene &;the platinum gene which causes the Russians to lighten or turn white. But not the same genes that cause a a Winter white to lighten.

Chloe never lightened in the summer but another WW I had did lighten in the winter & then darkened in the summer
