Tempting Rescue
I had been watching petfinder.com for a long time before I got our WW hybrid recently. I was looking for a dwarf and there was only Syrians listed every once in awhile within a 100 mile radius. Well the day I picked up Trooper, I noticed there was a dwarf hamster at our local Animal Control. His name is Silver and he is so cute. I went to look at him today and his paperwork says he is 1.5 years old. I am extremely tempted to take him home (He would have his own bin cage) but I don't know if I can handle the fact that he is closing in on 2 years old and may not live much longer. I am struggling with this one. The picture is not mine, hopefully it is okay for me to post it?

Re: Tempting Rescue
He does look very sweet bless him, it is hard knowing he won't have that long to live if he is that age already but it would be hugely gratifying to know that he spent his last months in a happy home with all the care he could wish for, I know what I would do but it isn't the easiest decision to make.

Re: Tempting Rescue
He looks like such a sweet hamster. It is hard making this decision when they are this age but you could provide him with such a lovely home for the rest of his life even if it's only a few months.
My family did a similar thing 6 years ago and adopted a 2 year old robo - I initially wanted to adopt him but my mum said I couldn't as I already had a hamster but I convinced her to allow my brother to get him - he only had him for 1 month but that time was greatly rewarding knowing he had such a great end to life.
But it does come down to what you feel is the right decision to make for yourself

Re: Tempting Rescue
I can totally understand why you would be tempted. What a sweetie and how lovely to make his last few months happy ones. It will be hard when he goes though. Goos luck with your choice.

Re: Tempting Rescue
I adopted my Chinese hamster when she was already 2 yrs old & I've had her for 9 mo & she's doing good.
I adopted a Syrian from the SPCA & her age is unknown
So whatever time the hamster lives after you adopt it will be happiness for the animal

Re: Tempting Rescue
I have decided to wait a bit & hope someone adopts him before Christmas. If he is still there on Christmas Eve, I may just have to adopt him. They have him sharing a glass tank with a Syrian which is crazy but they were snuggled up together when I visited.

Re: Tempting Rescue
If he's with a Syrian, I think that's calling to you "ADOPT MEEEEEEEEEE" . He's very cute too .
I need to find more creative ways of telling people their hamsters are cute - because I've been saying it a lot .

Re: Tempting Rescue
The listing for all of the Hamsters at Animal Control (Silver and 2 Syrian hamsters) were taken down. I really hope they all found wonderful homes for Christmas!
