Jaska
Well…this is a bit unexpected but today we got a new hamster. Had to go to a shop that was next door to a pet shop and had to have a look at the hamsters as you do We saw this little black hybrid and decided we would need to take him home.
We did have another cage as we were thinking about adopting a ham later in the year so needless to say I now feel a bit guilty but I’m sure we could squeeze another little one in the hamster room if we do some reorganising! We’ve went from 0 hamsters to 2 hamsters and now 3 in the space of 4 months lol. We’re addicted to them, they’re so much fun to have around No name as yet, still trying to decide but shall probably stick with the Russian theme to go along with Boris and Pasha.

Re: New Hamster
You could name him Slava or Mikhail Congrats!
Multiple hamsters just gives you a bigger hamily. Russians are very active so I'm sure you have your hands full.

Re: New Hamster
Congrats!
Look forward to hearing more about your little newbie once he settles.
My first ham was a black hybrid & I've always had a soft spot for them.

Re: New Hamster
Thanks for welcoming our new little ham He had a quick explore on Saturday when he got in to his cage and then didn't see him again until last night when he went for a drink. He seems very nervous and freezes on the spot for ages so just trying to give him space and just talking to him. Very different from Boris and Pasha who were happy to take a treat through the bars after a day. I don't know if it's because they were together at the start so they felt a bit more confident or beause they were from an independant pet shop.
We also decided on a name, Jaska. We kept calling him different things until one felt right Thank you for the suggestions though CB!

Re: New Hamster
Lovely name
I'm sure he'll come round soon enough once he's settled & made himself at home.
If they are in a litter group it can be a bit of a shock being all alone at first.

Re: New Hamster
I have Angelica hiding right now too. She's taking a long time to adjust compared to the others. I'm hoping by being her for a month that she will be happy to run around without the need for hiding.
I like the name Jaska

Re: New Hamster
Still no photos to share of Jaska. He’s very shy and we’ve not really seen him at all since we brought him home. He has been snuggled up in his nest only coming out to get a drink of water when it is dark and no one is there and to empty his food bowl. I’m not even sure he is eating it, think he is just pouching it, rushing back to his house and hoarding it. I’ve tried to offer him a sunflower seed a couple of times while he’s been in his house but he’s refused to take them.
I’m sure he must be peeing in his nest too as his sand bath is clean. Not really sure what to do as I’m starting to worry about how to remove soiled bedding when he won’t come out of his house and I don’t want to start rummaging around to see if he is eating his food hoard if it’s going to stress him out. Boris and Pasha would happily take treats the day after we got them so this is a new experience for us. Any suggestions on where to go from here would be appreciated

Re: New Hamster
What kind of house does he have?
One of my hams was extremely shy & nervous when I first got him, I had him in the Lief cabin with a litter tray inside which he used from day one fortunately, he would screech at the sound of my voice to begin with poor guy so I just used to lift the lid & speak to him for a moment or two then drop a sunflower seed in leaving him to screech in protest lol! but he did soon make the connection between big human hand & nice things to eat!
If you can't get into his house without disturbing him you may just have to go ahead & do it anyway, you can always put a small amount of food back where his hoard was if he has peed on it.

Re: New Hamster
Thanks Cypher. He's got a https://www.rodipet.de/shop/haeuser/...us-dalani.html. His sand bath is in the room with the door and his nest is in the next room. He's got a wheel and a flying saucer but he hasn't used either yet. He was so lively in the shop digging around lol. The pet shop also do a free health check at the vets they have and said to phone up for an appointment after 5 days but I don't know that if taking him would be a good idea based on his reluctance to leave his nest?
