Oh my! Only 22 cms. He IS tiny. I was hoping that it was a 28 cm wheel so he would look tinier in comparison but... no! he IS REALLY tiny. I'm going to hamnap him, and being so small it will be easy to hide him anywhere hehehe.

I heard that they do that a lot. Thankfully mine doesn't, but maybe Jaska does it because he's still young. Is he potty trained?

lol Hamsterita, talking of hamnapping again!
Some get obsessive about certain toys and will pee on it to mark it that it belongs to them. The wheel is popular for that, majority will grow out of it. But, if you constantly wash the wheel, the more they'll pee on it so only clean it with warm water so they can still smell their scent.

Yes he really is that tiny Boris and Pasha look like giants compared to him lol.

Jaska has two sand baths one he bathes in. The other has sand in it but he also has it stuffed full of tissue and he sleeps in it (Strangely Artie has done the same with his)!

Before he got his new wheel he pee'd in the substrate beside the sand bath now it's the wheel! I don't mind really as it's easy enough to clean with is being plastic when it starts to get too sticky and I only ever use water so it doesn't remove his scent. As Lizzy says I expect he'll maybe grow out of it as Boris and Pasha did. Pasha only pees in his sand and Boris has a corner in his labyrinth he pees in (he refuses to pee in sand for some reason) and at the moment Artie is fully committed to peeing on both his wheels :P

Well..where to start..since my post on the 8th Feb telling you all about how Jaska was coming out his shell he shattered the illusion the very next day. I was hoping it was just a silly phase but I don't think it is. It feels like we are nearly right back to where we started with him when we brought him home 5 months ago. He will no longer sit on your hand and take treats/food and even just offering him a seed from your fingertips he won't take it. He dives for cover the minute you walk in the room (no matter how slowly and quietly you enter). He will still take a seed through the bars but he doesn't hang around for long at all

Maybe it's just his personality but I don't think he should be that scared especially not in his own cage. We wondered if maybe we should try interacting with him outside the cage, let him have a run around on us and he hated it! Perhaps it was a stupid idea to try that but we thought maybe it would help him to feel that he is safe in his cage with no scary hands in it if we interacted with him outside the cage. I'm wondering if he would do better with a cage that had a side door that way we wouldn't need to stick our hands in at all, but then I wonder if it would make any difference. Sometimes I wish they would talk and just tell us what we can do to make it better :P

We weighed him again and he is now 36g, so he's put some weight on with his "get fat diet". Maybe that's what's wrong he doesn't like his more round look lol.

Anyway sorry for such a gigantic depressing ramble and here is a picture of the young man to make up for it

Sorry to hear that he has lost his confidence recently - it hard seeing them being scared when they are in their cage - I'm hoping he will regain his some confidence.
Jaska looks so sweet in that photo.

I'm really sorry to hear that Jaska hasn't made more progress or regained the confidence he had before, I don't think it was a bad idea to try handling him out of the cage again it seems like the obvious & right thing to do but sometimes our best intentions just don't work out.
I don't really think I have anything helpful to suggest, a cage with a door on the front might be better for him, there's no way of knowing really but for such a nervous ham having your hands just by the door may be a lot less threatening than hands having to come down from above.
I really like those cages you have but that is the one thing that puts me off (not that I actually need more cages!).
I often wish they could talk too.
He's such a lovely little guy, sweet photo of him there.
Good to hear he's at least gained some weight now.

You can change this but go slowly, having a door in the front does makes it less frightening when they see your hands, I always go for a cage with a top door and side door. It may be that instead of putting your hands in, use a tube or box for Jaska to climb into and then transport him to a play area, but start of with a small play area using some of his cage toys. This will help him build confidence slowly.
Also I would suggest the toilet paper trick, stuff some up your sleeves and leave for a couple of hours then place in his cage, he'll be curious and sniff it, this lets him get use to your smell, do this daily add a little for a week and see how he reacts to you then.
Mine have always pouched the toilet paper to use as extra bedding. Make sure it's unscented.
If the small play area works then gradually increase the size.

Definitely Jaska and Blacky must be far relatives. They are so alike! I've brought him home 6 months ago and he still doesn't want to be petted (probably he never will) and sometimes he's so unsocial... I also wish they could talk to us.

I think that front doors help a lot in these cases. And maybe you should try to take him out on a different place, or with different things, Blacky usually doesn't enjoy much his time out of the cage but sometimes I make it work.

OFFTOPIC. in the picture, is the food that is in the bowl burguess dwarf mix?

Thank you all for the support. I feel so bad for him that he feels so scared when he's in his own cage, makes me feel like a bad hamster Mum. I don't know that he will ever be as outgoing as the other 3 but right now I would be happy if he just wasn't scared in his cage! When it comes to fight or flight he is definitely flight.

I think I'll look in to getting a cage with a front door and I'll go back to the start with him as Lizzy suggested. The only cages I see that are a similar size to the Grosvenor are the Alaska, HH and Mickey 2xl (I don't like plastic shelves though I don't know why lol). I really like the look of the San marino but don't seem to be able to get it here. If you know of any other suitable cages please let me know

I too think Blacky and Jaska are distant relatives Hamsterita and yes it is Burgess dwarf hamster mix in the bowl

I have both the HH & Savic Mickey & the basic cage is the same, I don't use the accessories or shelves with either, you don't really need any of them if you more or less fill the base with substrate then just put your usual house, wheel, toys etc in as usual, you can possibly find a way to attach a shelf from your existing cage if you have one or use a free standing shelf or flat top house if you want that bit of shelf space.
If you're using silent runners though you'll probably need to fence of an area so the substrate is lower or it won't fit!
I do find you have to compromise a bit with the silent runner & think I managed to create much better layouts for hams overall with the smaller wheels leaving more space to arrange other things the way I wanted but it can work.
I think the big front door can make such a difference & you may need to experiment a bit with layout & what you have in the cage to see what he's most comfortable with.
He may never be overly confident but I think it could do a lot for him to have a change of cage & a fresh start.
Good luck with him & don't for a moment feel like a bad hamster mum, sometimes it is hard to get things right for our more timid little ones but you are doing the best you can for him.
