Those houses are lovely (Tinwë has the same one) & I am a bit surprised he hasn't used the sand, maybe he's peeing on his hoard to keep it safe! They really do that sometimes.
I've found that their character in the shop can often seem very different when you get them home, a nice house like that can have a down side with a ham that is shy or nervous as it's ideal for them to sneak out at night to grab a stash then stay hidden while people are about. Sometimes they do better to begin with if they only have a more open shelter to nest in like a big bendy bridge or something but it's a hard choice to make whether you change things or not.
It does sound as though he's being shy rather needing to see the vet for anything but you can't really know for sure when they hide all the time.
If you're making no progress at all with him it might be worth considering a change to his house & even his cage to see if he comes out of his shell a bit & gives you more chance to observe him at least.

Thanks for the advice I managed to have a look in his nest (much to his unhappiness as he shot through to the other room in his house and wouldn't come back until I went away!) and it does looks like he's been pouching everything from his bowl and sticking it in his nest. Not peeing on it thankfully but I'm wondering if he's even eating anything at all. I did wonder if maybe the house would just be encouraging him to hide so I'll maybe give him another week and then change his house to something more open like you suggested.

His cage is this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/Little-Frie...grosvenor+cage. We've put a bit cardboard in it to make it a bit smaller lengthwise (not sure if that will help or not or if getting a smaller cage would be better) and I've moved his food bowl from the top of his house to the cardboard and he's ventured to it to pouch and run back so at least he's going a bit further than the roof of his house

He's not in the room with Boris and Pasha yet either, we were going to move him through there at the weekend but was wondering if he would be best staying where he is until he's a bit more settled?

Sorry for the rambling post lol.

Maybe try doing what I did with Flynt (my most terrified ever ham!) just lift the lid on his house, speak to him quietly for a moment, drop a treat in & put the lid back down again.
It took me some time to gain Flynt's trust doing this & I was beginning to despair of the little guy ever gaining confidence but with time he did & actually became the cuddliest little ham I've ever had!
I did a similar thing with Tinwë, although confident for the first few days when he suddenly got nervous he would come to the door of his house & hiss at me then dive back inside little tyke! He wasn't happy at first but soon accepted that it wasn't a threat & was coming back out to take treats again.
Each ham is different so you do have to guess which way to play it but don't get too disheartened, I'm sure you'll win him over.
I wouldn't worry too much about moving the cage, he probably won't be that disturbed by the change if he's in his house until all is quiet.

I love the grosvenor large rat (haha) and hamster cage. My roborovski Flower is in one. She prefers it to a bigger cage that I moved her to (briefly).

The cardboard sounds like a good plan. Do you have lots of hiding places for him? Flower loves to go in her house, in her log with holes in and under her bendy bridge arch.

I have been dropping a treat in to her every evening when she comes out and she is not running away nearly so much. I have had her a year. No need to rush things!

Thanks for the replies Cypher and FF Yes we love that cage too, it's well made. Had ordered a Barney for him originally but it was broken when it arrived Think it might have been a bit overwhelming for him anyway with so much space. He does have lots of hiding places (we think anyway!). He's got an eggbox and cardboard tubes. Have added a ceramic Christmas pudding house on top of the rodipet one and stuck some bedding and a whimzee toothbrush in it to see if the cover makes him feel braver :P

He actually hung around for a little longer last night when we were in the room he's in..until the fireworks started and he ran away It's bad enough on fireworks night without them on other random days.

Found your thread about Flynt (he was a very cute hamster) Cypher and had a read, will just keep taking it slowly until we win him over

Fireworks are such a pain, I hope they're all finished now so little one doesn't get scared by them again, sounds as though he's getting a little more confident in spite of them.
Tell him we're all waiting to admire him when he gets really brave & poses for us

Must be frustrating! Really hope he will come out of hiding soon so you can start the bonding process. One Russian I had took him 17 days to come above the bedding. I left him completely alone cause I was sick so I didn't mind the long stretch. He turned out to be a very happy and became a very loveable hammy.

Couple of pictures of Jaska. He's still very shy but we're making some progress with him. Had to take out his rodipet house for the time being as it was just making it too easy for him to hide away.

He will take treats now and will sit on your hand but he runs away if you try and stroke him. He's joined Boris and Pasha in the hamster room (as it is now known) a couple of weeks ago as well and it doesn't seem to have upset anyone

So good to hear you're making progress with him, I'm sure his confidence will continue to grow now.
He really is a very handsome little man!
