Re: Jaska
Lol, I think it's a great title. I don't feel like I'm important enough to be Queen though. I did some looking as I do like the Ham Tsar idea and came across Tsarevna (which is daughter or granddaughter of a Tsar), so I was thinking maybe Ham Tsarevna. Please tell me if you think it's awful lol :P
Hijack Jaska's thread all you like, it's not like he uses it much lol!
I've nothing new to share about him sadly. I've not really seen him much at all which makes me sad. He was about last night before I went to bed but he sat trembling in his cardboard log and even although I moved so so slowly and quietly (and stopped breathing so as not to scare him lol) he was still flinching. He did eventually come and take some seeds from my hand (I had started to breath again by this point or I would have passed out) but it took him a really long time to come to me. I was just trying to talk to him quietly to encourage him but I was running out of things to talk about so had to start talking about the election lol. Maybe that was the trick, he didn't want to hear about that so came for his seeds and made a run for it.
I also got a nasty fright when I went in the hamster room this morning to find his front door was down! I'd just put it up but didn't close it properly in case he decided to come back out and I went to see Artie. I forgot all about Jaska's door. Luckily he was still in his cage though to be honest the thought of Jaska going looking for adventures is unlikely. It did give me a fright though and I felt terrible. I'll need to be more careful.

Re: Jaska
I'm sure the boys must think you're important enough to be a Queen BP I do like Ham Tsarevna though, not awful at all I think it would make a great custom title
It is sad that Jaska is still so nervous, poor boy, I don't think you can really do anything more or do anything differently to encourage him, I did have to laugh at the election chat trick though lol! have to remember that one if anyone is being a bit reluctant!
Your not alone having those heart stopping moments when you see the door open! I've done it twice with Zeki now but I can't see Jaska fancying going out for a stroll either!

Re: Jaska
Oooo I have had some door moments as well. Once I hear 'thump' and I looked down to see Gopal racing about on the floor. His little barney cage door was open (cage on a low coffee table). Luckily is is a very laid back hamster and I easily caught him.
Glad that Jaska will take seeds from you. Bless him being so nervous.

Re: Jaska
As cypher said, I'm sure that your boys would think different and for them you are the queen of them all! Anyway if you're not comfortable with that, I think that Ham Tsarevna is gorgeous and fits you well too.
I'm very sorry that Jaska is still so shy, but he taking the seeds of your hand is a big step, isn't it? I couldn't help but laugh while I was reading the way you approached him. I hold my breath a lot of times too. But how could you possibly talk to him about politics? You was pushing it too much!! I can understand why he run!!
I understand what you felt when you saw the door. I've left the door of Blacky's cage opened two times since I have the new terrarium, that's one of the reasons why I don't wanna put more substrate on the front, because that way he can't come out even if he wants to. You would think that he wouldn't be interested, but when he was in the fish tank he tried to scape twice, so I don't trust him.

Re: Jaska
Thanks cypher, ff and Hamsterita I'm glad I'm not the only one who leaves doors open lol, makes me feel a little better
He will take seeds from me sometimes Hamsterita but it can take him a long time to pluck up the courage and other times he will come over quite quickly. He's very unpredicatble. We've had him just over 8 months now so I don't think he's ever going to be snuggly or comfortable with us. I'll stay confident though, Blacky is like a new ham these days so perhaps Jaska will get there too

Re: Jaska
He may surprise you yet BP, they do seem to get more relaxed as they get older, he may never be a snuggle ham but hopefully he will learn to be less scared & enjoy your company (& seeds!) a bit more.

Re: Jaska
You are still on time by my schedule! I bought Blacky on september so you still have two months!
Now, seriously, maybe cypher is right. I think that Blacky must be older than I thought, as I will show you in his thread.
And anyway, to reach that point with Blacky I did things that I'm sure that some people will critisize as I didn't do everything "by the book". I don't think I mistreated him or abused of him, but sometimes I pushed him a little bit, doing things that I knew he didn't like, as taking him out of his cage, or just handle him a bit. He started to get used to those things soon, but I'm sure that he didn't like them at all at the begining, and maybe even now he would prefer to be left alone. So it's hard to know what to do, really. I want to believed that I've helped him, I think that this way he can enjoy other experiences in his life, and that it helped him to be less fearful, and I suppose that way he can live a more relaxed life too. But maybe I'm just lying to myself.
Anyway, to be completely honest I did all those things more for me than for him, because I think that If I had more hams at some point I would have left him be and I would have been more focused on the other hams that enjoyed more my company.... I don't know If you understand what I mean

Re: Jaska
I so love Jaska, yes I know he's shy and isn't often seen but when he is, he makes up for it. Deep down he knows you're his mom and that you only want the best for him.
As for the door moment, done that a few times. When you see the door open, your heart stops.

It's sad that Jaska is still very nervous and scared. But it good that he is brave enough to take seeds from you. Hopefully he can relax more as he gets older!
I know that feeling of forgetting to close a cage door. I've occasionally left the lid open on Pumpkin's cage - so I have to make sure I don't put anymore substrate in than what I currently have in her cage as otherwise she reach the top and climb out. Glad that he was all safe and sound in his cage!
