SKB I use the rodipet water bowls, I tried a few bowls before that I thought might be suitable but nothing seemed to appeal, since getting these though all my hams have chosen the bowl over the bottle.
I'm using the Rodipet mini ceramic litter tray as a water bowl lol. The dwarf hamster sized one. Just with a shallow covering on the bottom - it's being ignored mostly.

Smashing photos there, cypher. What an adorable face. In one of them he reminds me of the mouse from Beatrix Potter

lol! thanks velma

Serendipity don't you find those litter trays a bit too shallow? I don't find them much use for anything tbh! Tinwë has got a couple in his house but I'm going to replace them with something bigger as they barely hold any sand.

He really did go nuts for the antos toothbrush Lizzy but he's got a couple of tiny whimzee toothbrushes (I wasn't sure which colour he might like so he got two!) & he's having a nibble but not overdoing it now.

It's been ages since I updated little Tinwë's thread & no news hasn't been good news sadly

After being really happy & interactive for the first week he suddenly began to get very nervous, much more so in the evening or morning when he was still quite happy to come to me for food or treats if a bit skittish at times but in the evenings he just seemed really frightened, getting him out into a taming/play cage just made things worse so I had to give up on that for now.
I was a bit flummoxed tbh & wondered if something had happened one night to scare him but couldn't imagine what could have been that bad that I wouldn't have been aware of too.
He also started to hiss at me if he was in his house & I was tidying up his cage or doing the usual food & water stuff, we did work round that one getting him to poke his nose out & take a treat before hastily retreating again, gradually I got him to come out completely & sit in my hand & even more gradually worked up to him being comfortable with me lifting the top of the house to take his litter tray out or offer him a treat but still once outside the house he was very very nervous.
I feel a bit bad for dithering & taking so long to move him but as he's seemed so happy with things to begin with I was trying to find a way to make the cage work for him but it seems he was after all just too scared of so much space poor boy

This has been a first for me, most of my hams have needed upsizing rather than down after I've had them for a while but every one is so different I try my best to interpret their needs & what they need they get so if he wants small he can have small!

So on Tuesday evening I moved him into a 84L RUB & the difference in just a day has been wonderful to see! He's quite a happy little man again, coming out a few times in the day when I was around (so possibly more as I was out in the garden much of the day), coming out to run in his wheel earlier without needing me to encourage him & frantically meerkating to get at me in the mornings when I get up!
During the day while I was messing with his beloved sand bath (the original one was a bit too big for the bin & I was trying to find a nice alternative) he popped out to investigate quite happily, gave the sand bath a test dig & seemed to approve with no signs of nervousness at all.
He was still a little skittish yesterday evening but still much, much better so fingers crossed we'll be just be moving forward from here with no more backward steps!

It looks very crowded in his bin! I tried to get as many of his favourite things in as I could & he seems to like it that way.
Someone has offered to cut the plastic for me but I didn't want to leave it any longer so for now he doesn't have any panels & has the barred top of the Kerry (held down with a bungee cord under the bin so no chance of escapes!), I'll sort out a bin with some mesh panels & a mesh top soon I think but for now this is working fine.
I should be able to get more photos of my lovely little man now he's out & about again but for now here's his new home.

Sorry to hear you've had a set back but I'm glad you've found a good solution that seems to be working. A good example that bigger isn't always better, it really does depend on your Ham. Bin looks fab though

So glad you found out what was making the little fellow so nervous and upset. Must have been a bit of a puzzle at first. As Velma said, a very useful lesson that should be noticed by owners - it's the right cage that matters and it is not always the biggest.
It may be a crowded bin but what matters is Tinwe is happy there.

It's not always easy to tell what the problem is if you've never seen it before and I remember being equally puzzled by James's behaviour when he was unhappy in his larger cage. I don't know about you but found it quite sad to see them like that but I'm glad that there was a relatively simple solution.

This kind of thing proves that every hamster is as individual as we are when it comes to what they want out of their living environment and they're not all going to comply with what we would normally think is better for them.

You've done well with Tinwe's setup considering that you've had less space to work with and I've found myself that it takes a bit more planning to fit everything you want in.

Sorry to hear about the little setback Tinwë had, but it good that found out what the cause of Tinwë becoming more nervous and upset, this shows that one cage size doesn't fit all and that it depends upon the individual hamster (I experienced this with my fearful Syrian Toffee, who preferred a smaller cage and play area where she was a lot more confident which was a complete contrast to Sherbet). Your cage layout does look really good, it is harder to fit things into a smaller cage and does take a lot more planning/trial and error but as long a Tinwë likes it that the most important thing and it still looks like he has plenty to do in his cage.
