Talking Kiki's thread

I decided to make a thread for Kiki as she keeps doing silly stuff. She is without a doubt the pet with the biggest character that I have ever had.

Kiki is very determined little lady. If she doesnt want your attention she will make this warning screeching/chirping sound at you. She never bites, but she figured that if she screeches, she will be left alone.

From time to time she even screeches while sleeping! I rush to her cage, lift everything until I find her (as I'm scared she is stuck or is in pain); and I'm always met with half-closed eyes looking up at me in confusion.

The first vet I took her to refused to get her out of her carrier himself due to her warning him. I told the next one that she didn't bite and she just scooped her up. Kiki screeched for a good 3-4 seconds before sitting still in the vet's hand and looking like the biggest questionmark I have ever seen! I really would love to know what exactly went through her tiny head at that moment ahaha.

She also has this odd sleeping position.

But she sure seems comfortable!

Kiki is very food-driven. In fact it became a problem and the vet said she needed to lose a bit of weight.
I did a full cage clean and filled her bowl with a teaspoon of food. As usual she ate the parts she liked and left the rest expecting me to refill it the next day. What she didn't know was that the new rule said 'no more food until your bowl is empty!'
The first few nights she would patiently wait at her foodbowl for a refill. She didnt want to even have a look at whatever was left as she didnt like it. It took her 5 days to eat the rest.
I must say I didnt expect her to be that determined to not eat something she didnt fancy.
She even tried looking underneath her bowl to see if she was lucky that something had fallen through it!

Anyway. This plan with filling a bit into her bowl when it was completely empty, went really well the first 3 weeks. She lost 7g or so and I was really proud of her. BUT - and yes there's a but - this is where we are now and now she has figured out that the bowl has to be empty, before it will be refilled. I checked her cage and she actually eats the parts that she doesnt like to get the parts that she likes again. (if that made any sense). She doesnt hide them anywhere. She regained 5g because of her new 'smart' idea.

I didn't think this was too bad at first. I would just wait and refill her bowl when it had been empty for a couple of hours instead. But now she empties her bowl and starts being extremely noisy until I refill it.
Today I walked by her cage and completely ignored her sulking in her foodbowl. This she really didnt take well.
First she walked up to the bars and started biting them. Then back to standing at her bowl for at bit. She then ran around in her cage for 4-5 seconds and then she started climbing the bars. In the end she was at the very top gnawing until I got crazy.

And that is what she thinks of her diet.

Wow! What a determined little critter!! I had one night like you described where there was noise coming from my Syrian's house. I ran over to see if he was ok, but as soon as he woke up, the noise stopped. I haven't heard a peep out of him since.
I love her sleeping position! That is hilarious! I've never seen my ham asleep. I've never tried to lift his house to catch a peek. I think it would really upset him. I've only seen him fall asleep in his wheel from sheer exhaustion from running nonstop!
Your hamster is absolutely adorable by the way.

Well that's an amazing introduction to the life of Kiki! She sounds like she has personality coming out of her tiny cute little ears!

I love my food too, I feel your pain Kiki but if you eat your pellets I'll keep eating my salad

Thank you all for your kind words

virtualkeith:
I think it was proven somewhere that hamsters had dreams too. It really makes me wonder when I see Kiki sleeping and hear her mutter at the same time (:
Kiki never used to sleep around the cage. It changed when she had an accident with her house and got stuck. Since then she kinda got the 'all houses are evil' attitude
I would love to see your ham asleep in his wheel! That must be a real delight to watch ^^

Cypher:
I definitely never expected her to be like this. Right now I feel lucky that I got her with me home - and not her brother (which I did consider for a moment). She really is silly and irresistable

Piebald and Shannonmcn:
Diets are no fun, I think we can all agree on that one. Kiki does make me feel guiltier than ever though! She really knows how to act like a starving injured puppy. If I open the door to her cage she will rush out and sit on my hand. If I then put her back inside, I cant even touch the door before she has ran out and is sitting on my hand again. Thing is, if I ignore her she would run out and end up on the floor! If I do manage to almost close the door she is good halfway up the bars on it, before I can close it.

If I manage to close the door, she slides down from the bars and just sit on her bum for a few seconds - very puzzled. Almost as if she's saying 'but, but! I sits on hand, I deserves treats!'

Also Shannonmcn, Kiki says that you should just hide the salad in your cheeks and complain to everyone, until they give you the food you want. She tested it, works 9/10 times lol

Hi again Penguin, I did try to get a picture of my hamster asleep in his wheel, but as you probably know, hamsters have amazing hearing. I think I took a deep breath and he woke back up which left me with no time to grab a camera. He was sound asleep with his head hanging out of the wheel and his little mouth was open! It was hilarious! Oh well, opportunity missed.....
